He is in post war Vienna, a city he finds facing critical shortages of goods -- resulting in a flourishing black market. Holly has traveled to Austria at the invitation of an old school friend named Harry Lime, who has offered him a job. But he soon finds out that he is too late -- Harry Lime has recently been killed in a traffic accident. After spending some time speaking with Lime's friends and associates, Martins takes note of inconsistencies in their stories. He then makes up his mind to find out what really happened to the mysterious Mr. Lime.
