TRANSCRIPT
When I look around at the state of things, it's easy to get disheartened. Not only is there a lot of hardship and uncertainty, but times like these bring out the best in people and also the worst.
People are doing things that are inconsiderate, selfish, self-serving. They don't stop to think that what they might be doing could influence someone other than themselves. They don't care.
Over the last week or so, I've considered writing a piece about what's been going on lately and my frustration over it, specifically the frustration over how people behave.
Then I heard this quote this morning on The Akimbo podcast by Seth Godin:
I care enough to make things better.

I thought, "That's the thing, it's caring enough to make things better."
I wanted to get on a soapbox and just say, "Don't you care?" Don't you care that other people are suffering? Don't you care that your actions could cost someone?
I made a note about the idea to use for a written piece and mulled over it for an hour.
It felt kind of pointless.
You're not going to change the minds of people who don't want to change. You're not going to make people care when they don't. (Isn't there a sad Bonnie Raitt song about that?)
Yeah, I couldn't make anyone change who didn't want to change.
But then I got it.
This wasn't for them.
It wasn't for the people who are self-centered and self-serving. It wasn't for the people who were going to continue to go out, for example, in public when they know that an elderly person could end up sick and dying as a result of their actions. It wasn't for them at all.
It was for someone else.
It was for the person sitting along the wall, sitting on the sidelines, considering whether to take action or not, considering whether to contribute or not, whether to do their work or not, considering if what they were doing mattered or not, if ever they were to get over the self-sabotaging tendencies within themselves that they might actually be able to make a difference.
The example from Seth's podcast was of someone who had a history of abuse and hardship and whose history was holding her back from doing her work, and she knew it.
The question is not whether or not your history has been hard.
It isn't whether you have quirks and weaknesses and ways of sabotaging yourself.
The question is, do you care enough to make things better?

This is not for the people who will never change. It is not for the people who will never do the work. It is for the people who want to do the work, if only they could get out of their own way.
The only question you have to ask yourself is, do I care enough to make things better?
Past narratives don't matter. Your fears, your reservations, the questions you have over will or won't this work, anything you've ever been through, any self-limiting beliefs, none of that matters.
What matters is, do you care enough to make things better?
You only have to care enough.
A lot of people don't care. Current events are showing that.
A lot of people have been through hardship. A lot of people now will go through even more.
We can let those things hold us back from doing our work, or we can say, No, I care more than that.

I care too much to not do anything.

I care more than the pain.

I care more than the fear.

I care more than the weaknesses and the ways that I get in my own way.

I care.

I care enough to make things better.

This can apply in so many ways—your work, your life, yourself, in times of uncertainty, in times when no one else is showing up or when not enough are showing up.
You can use all the excuses in the world, but at the end of it all, you have one question to answer, do I care enough to make things better?
