At some point in dance we have to address the taboo things that people don't talk about. Like have legitimate conversations about those things and making changes systematically. Some aspects of dance are so traditional from when said style was first created. It is a fact that no dancer will ever achieve perfection, because there is always room to grow. That is what is great about creativity.
But for some reason in dance as a system, people enjoy preserving traditional values, especially the toxic ones. Like the stereotype that dancers have to look a certain way in order to "make it". Dance is a limitless art form when it comes to how far it can grow, and it has the capability of going so far.
Like dancers, dance (as a system) always has the capacity to grow regardless of people's perception on perfection. Dance consists of constant learning and change. It doesn't matter how much dance experience anyone has. We have every power to change stereotypes and the side effects of being in the dance world, but people aren't willing to change. That is pretty normal for every kind of issue in the world but I am targeting dance in particular.
I love dance and I acknowledge that it shifted in a good way, but it still has a long way to go.
This dance podcast, meant for everyone, discusses dance systematically from the prospective of a university student studying dance. The goal of this podcast is to encourage people to think about dance as a system in a lighthearted format. Episodes will be published every other Thursday. Welcome to the convo!
Upcoming episodes will be released on the following dates:
November 28th
December 5th
December 19th
Viewer discretion is advised
