God’s Word For Today

- 1 Pet 5:6,7 ESV 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

HUMILITY AND PRAYER

Humility and prayer are deeply intertwined, are they not? One can’t exist without the other. A humble person is prayerful, and vice-versa. Although humility might be mistaken as weakness today, in God’s eyes a humble person is strong. Christ is humble and in no way He is weak.

Humility is the attitude that makes our prayer aright. Certainly, a proud heart couldn’t pray rightly. The proud Pharisee was deceived to think that he was praying. But, God rejected his arrogant prayer. To be humble is by recognizing that we are before the ‘mighty hand of God’. His pre-eminence and power should motivate us to be humble in the same way that a 7-foot-tall person should feel tiny if he’s standing before a skyscraper.

Humility is the key to honor. He honors the humble in due time. As Solomon says, “Before destruction a man's heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor.”[Prov 18:12] Hardships, including persecution, are overwhelming. Indeed, we’re tempted to worry and doubt when in hardships. When we see the wicked prospering and we’re so down and feeling small, we might doubt the power of God. Yet, the truth remains. Our experiences, though how bad they are, neither change the character of God nor our worth in Him.

Hence, we should hang on to our confidence in God and pray. Prayer is the action that demonstrates our humility. God does allow heaviness to bend our knees, does He not? Instead of retaliation and fear, we have to ‘cast all our cares unto Him”. He is not only capable but He is committed to helping us because He cares for us. We are the apple of His eyes, are we not?

Today, let’s recognize that God’s mighty hand is on top of every situation we are in. Let’s neither panic nor be repulsive but humbly submit to His control in prayer. Let’s ‘not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’[Phil 4:6,7]
