- 1 Peter 5:8-11 ESV

8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

A BALANCED VIEW OF SUFFERING

We should look at the two sides of our sufferings always - from Satan and God’s purposes. Definitely, the devil inflicts pain in order for us to sin against God. He is like a roaring lion that intimidates us. Thus, let’s always be ‘sober-minded’ [well-balanced and self-disciplined] and ‘watchful’ [alert and cautious]. Intimidation is to scare us to forget that we are more than conquerors in Christ and he is the defeated foe. On the contrary, let’s resist him as one planting his feet on the ground, firm and unmovable. Truth dispels lies. [John 8:32] We should be encouraged that what we are going through isn’t isolated but is common to every believer. As Peter had said earlier, ‘Don’t be surprised when trials come.”[1 Pet 4:12]

On the other hand, God allows suffering for 'a little while’. Suffering is for a season. As Paul said, “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.’[1 Cor 10:13] Peter referred to God as the ‘God of all grace’, because He won’t let us be tested beyond that which is needed. He would ‘complete, confirm, strengthen, and establish us’ That is, He is making us what we ought to be. Although we resist Satan squarely and firmly, it is God who makes us formidable and strong.

Today, let us not forget the balance in approaching our suffering. Let’s resist the devil with all we’ve got. Moreover, let us rest upon God to restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish us. In short, we fight Satan because God is fighting for us.
