- 2 PET 1:1-2 ESV

Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: 2 May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
A SERVANT AND APOSTLE

Interestingly, Peter introduced himself in both his former Jewish name, Simeon, and the name given by Jesus, Peter. He had considered himself both as an honored servant or slave of Jesus and Christ's apostle. An "apostle" is an official position in the early church by those who Jesus had specifically chosen and commissioned to fulfill His specific mission. Thus, Peter expressed both as under the authority of Christ, as well as having authority from Christ to deliver the commands and instructions as His slave, which he is writing in this epistle.

He writes to believers because of the righteousness of God and Savior, Jesus Christ. And let us not forget that no one is righteous because he is smart enough, or special enough on their own. It’s solely by faith in Christ. Leaders within the church are not morally or spiritually more privileged than others. It is only by Christ's righteousness that we receive this precious and valuable faith. Jesus has secured this faith for us. Could we be proud to claim it? [see Eph 2:8,9]

Peter prayed that his readers would have peace and grace. This happened in and through the knowledge of God and the Lord Jesus Christ. In other words, Peter's greeting is a prayer that we as his readers would find abundant grace and peace in knowing God and Jesus the Lord. Certainly, knowing God is the right path toward experiencing peace and grace. There is no other way.
