5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.

MAKE EVERY EFFORT

God has granted us everything we need to lead the life He calls us to. We are not missing anything, are we? Through faith in Jesus, we have been granted the right to participate, right now, in God's nature. We can partner with Christ in fulfilling God's purpose on earth. We have been freed from the corruption of sin. God has given us all we need to live like Jesus, but now we must actually use those gifts.

All of these do sound fascinating, don’t they? But, what does it mean for us today? Why does it seem that many Christians today are so far away from participating in God's nature, not living with Christ's purpose, joy, and love? Why do some still continue to live in the sin from whose corruption we have supposedly been freed?

The key is on our part. We’ve got to appropriate it by faith. Now that we have been empowered to do so, we must "make every effort" to add the following qualities to, or "alongside," our faith. In other words, we must start living the life we believe is really true.

There are seven areas we’re exhorted to ‘make every effort’ to achieve. And, as in painting wherein layers of painting coats are done, we progress by adding a quality of life’s character, one at a time. From faith to virtue to knowledge, to self-control, to godliness, to brotherly affection and to love. Faith, virtue, and knowledge are qualities we develop before the sight of God. On the other hand, self-control, godliness, brotherly affection, and love are qualities essential to demonstrate in our relationships with others. In other words, we must deepen our relationship with God before we can widen our relationship with others.

We notice that living our Christian life is both a ‘fruit’ and a conscious ‘effort’. God works and we work too. [Phil 2:12,13] Today, how did we progress in our Christian life towards displaying the fruit of our Christian life by making effort to appropriate the truth of who we are.
