2 Peter 1:19-21

19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

LET’S HONOR THE SCRIPTURES

Some prophecies are fulfilled while others are yet to happen. Prophecies regarding the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus have been fulfilled. But those prophecies about Jesus’ return as judge and king are still to happen in the future. We still live in a world of darkness, don’t we? But God’s word, particularly His prophecies, are as lamps in our darkness. They motivate us, enliven us, and prepare us. But these lamps, those prophecies, will no longer be needed when Christ returns. As John said, “Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will have not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him because we shall see him as he is.”[1 John 3:2]

As in the breaking of day, Jesus is the morning star who shines in our hearts. In his vision, John also writes, “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”[Rev 22:16] Did not Jesus claim that He is the light? [John 8:12] And as such, He will bring lasting light unto the world, especially our hearts.

This darkened world is full of scoffers. They mock the prophecies of Christ’s soon return. In contrast, He is our hope.[Titus 2:13]. We take what He says at face value. “In their[unbelievers] case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”[2 Cor 4:4] Thus, the believers’ hearts are enlightened because of the light of the gospel. Resultingly, we do live with expectation and hope that His words[prophecies] are going to be fulfilled surely, don’t we? As Paul said, “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”[Rom 15:3]

Why we should hope? “This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.”[Psa 18:30] God’s word is neither a result of man’s imagination nor by his will. It is the Spirit who moves holy men to write the scriptures.[2 Tim 3:16] Let us honor His words. Otherwise, we would be condemned by our rejection of the truth. [Jesus warned, “The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.”[John 12:48]
