An overview of the book: Sex at Dawn It seems like in todays culture that women trade sex for protection / shelter and status and from the males Sex at Dawn challenges this standard narrative and says that is not a biological truth but a cultural idea. The male looks for signs of youth, fertility, health, absence of previous sexual experience, and likelihood of future sexual fidelity. In other words, his assessment is skewed toward finding a fertile, healthy young mate with many childbearing years ahead and no current children to drain his resources. She looks for signs of wealth (or at least prospects of future wealth), social status, physical health, and likelihood that he will stick around to protect and provide for their children. Her guy must be willing and able to provide materially for her (especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding) and their children (known as male parental investment)." Animals —- We humans are the most sexual beings on earth In terms of duration, human beings spend more of our lifetime having sex than any other animal Most mammals only have sex when the female is ovulating. Humans are rare in that we have sex any time After chimps and bonobos gorillas are our next closest primate relatives they have sex roughly 12 - 15 times per birth / conception Humans have sex roughly 800 - 1000 times per birth Chimps bonobos humans and dolphins are the only animals to have sex for pleasure. All highly social and intelligent where community is integral to their survival 300 species of primates none are monogamous Hunter gatherer Tribes —— That were discovered without modern societal norms needed a sense of community to survive and often sharing partners ensured that children would have multiple potential fathers so if one died the kid would have other fathers to step up and take care of the kid. Distributes the risk In amazon tribes a fetus is an accumulation of sperm from many men, so he will get the strength of one man, the kindness of another, the mind of another. They believe if the woman stops having sex the fetus would not continue to grow The fathers feel thankful that other men contributed to the conception of their child The birth of swingers - the fighter pilots of WWII Sexual novelty and having multiple sexual partners increases testosterone. Some men have described the urge to cheat on their partner as almost feeling like life and death. Men with lowered testosterone are more then 4x as likely to suffer from clinical depression, fatal heart attacks and death by and cancer when compared with men their same age with higher levels of testosterone. Also more likely to develop alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. And have a far greater risk of Dying of any cause ranging from 88% to 250% depending on the study. Conclusion: Don't take sex so seriously 1/2 million families in the us were polyamorous at the time the book was written So what should we do? No answers but they explain that its natural to feel desire. Just because you and your partner are attracted to other people doesn’t mean there is something wrong with you your relationship or your partner. Allow that your going to be tempted.
