Takeaways:
Throughout the Bible, God has used food as a means to communicate spiritual truths and realities.
Jesus Came…
- “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many”.
- “The Son of Man came to seek and to save the ‘lost’”.
- “The Son of Man has come eating and drinking…”
- Meals are more than food. They’re social occasions. They represent friendship, community, and welcome.
- For Jesus a meal was not just a meal, it was an opportunity for ministry. A meal was an opportunity for relationship.
Good News at the Table
- Though misunderstood, Jesus did not isolate from sinners. He spent time with them around the table.
- God graciously includes those the world excludes.
- God promises an eternal banquet in a new creation
- Jesus opens up the banquet through his death and resurrection
- God meets our spiritual need, just as food meets our physical need.
Last Supper
- Jesus wanted his disciples to see that they needed him spiritually in the same way they need food and drink physically.
Communion Reflections
- What is a lie that you have been believing? Can you think of something that you have bought into that isn’t true about God or about you?
- Maybe you think that God doesn’t love you right now because of your circumstances.
- Maybe you think that God will never be pleased with you because you see God as continually disappointed.
- God is great, he is in control of everything. God is good, he satisfies my soul. God is glorious, his opinion matters most. God is gracious, he doesn’t want me to prove anything.
Discussion Questions:
- What if food is more than just fuel for our bodies, but a reminder of God’s provision and love for us?
- What if our tables are more than just a place to consume, they are a means of God’s grace to others?
- Why is it easier to isolate from “sinful” people rather than invite them to our table?
- Why do you think God chose to use food to communicate spiritual realities to his people?
