As a manager, I don’t always agree with my boss. Likewise, my teammates don’t always agree with me. Handled improperly, it’s easy to mistake a dissenting opinion as disrespect.

Over the course of my career, I’ve found dozens of ways to handle this situation improperly as an employee and as a manager. Don’t worry, I won’t be sharing any of them on the podcast.

Instead, I found two great articles that highlight a few easy strategies for managing dissent with a superior and for creating a safe environment for our teammates to productively disagree.

In this episode I talk about:

  • The difference between candor and brutal honesty
  • How to use “I don’t mean” and “I do me” to create contrast
  • Eight simple ways to build trust with a direct report
