You know the age-old story - what do you do when you lose your job unexpectedly? How do you survive? How do you make it? How do you do the thing that only you can do so well?

What's In Store For You

Our guest's first job was a busboy at the Big Yellow House Restaurant in Southern California. He was also a five-day returning champion on the $25,000 Pyramid game show.

After multiple instances where he was impacted by business restructuring, he reinvented himself and moved into entrepreneurship. Since then he has authored 12 books on the power of business relationships, presentation skills, sales, networking, entrepreneurship. He speaks to corporate, law firm, and convention audiences. He's also the host of the popular podcast "Making Waves at C-level".

Let's find out how Thom Singer has managed to turn his job loss experiences into golden opportunities towards entrepreneurship.

  • [04:06] What was the first business lesson that he learned in his first job as a busboy at the Big Yellow House restaurant?
  • [05:26] Two more major business lessons he learned to take note of!
  • [07:25] Thom walks us through his $25,000 dollar pyramid experience as a five-time champion (WOW).
  • [08:41] Thom takes us through his next experience of losing his job in the corporate world.
  • [10:24] Did it ever occur to Thom that he could be an entrepreneur instead of being an employee during that period?
  • [11:57] Is there anything Thom can share on how people can set up a negotiation in order to move to their next career step?
  • [15:36] What eventually nudged Thom to move on from corporate America into entrepreneurship?
  • [17:23] Getting laid off on April 1st (April Fools); what was running through Thom's mind as this happened?
  • [18:19] What came to Thom's mind as the next logical step to take after that final job restructuring?
  • [20:47] What are a few steps to take and develop for someone who does not have a marketing background and wanted to become a solopreneur?
  • [22:23] Is there anything they can lean on to make a transition from "Eew, icky" to "I've got to do this" regarding self-marketing.
  • [23:45] How did he begin to do a podcast? What was in his mind to start the podcast to effectively brand himself?
  • [25:24] Biggest piece of advice that Thom would like to share with people who want to take a leap into the unknown.
