On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. At the end of the week, he would have them highlight every single thing that did not fit their core and that's the first step for them to open their eyes. Realize that they are spending a lot of time doing things that they shouldn't be doing and spend more time doing the things that they should be doing. The client would typically have a really hard time moving out of the “technician role” to the “producer role”. You need someone who can come in and lead a team, especially when things start to get hectic and stressful. They want the “unicorn” to do 30 things and they only getting seven done. The visionary and integrator tend to fall back into those patterns, this is where Kyle and his team have to place a monetary goal for them to delegate, or they're not going to be able to grow. The one big tip Kyle would give clients is how they can create leverage. If you get a big enough lever, you can move the world. Freedom of time or financially, one of the two or both, and the only way that you're ever going to accomplish it are through creating leverage. This is found through masterminds, coaches, consultants, and their systematic lever. Where you can build out systems that do things for you. Typically it's through testing, data, trial, and error, or divisionary. It also has to do a lot with their mindset of actually wanting freedom or a job, because you can't have both. Now you want to know who runs the company and understand there's a brand behind them. It's really not about B2B or B2C, it's about humans selling something to other humans. In the B2B space, it's more important because it's based on relationships. Making decisions in B2B is way riskier than it is on the B2C side. You would want to know who you are buying from on the B2B side because if you don't like that car, you would never be able to buy from that auto dealer again. But if you purchase a piece of software that the company's going to use, you could be stuck with that for a long time. That relationship has to be strong. You need to think about who is going to support you in the B2B space to make sure you are successful. Eric and his team focus on helping companies figure out which platform their customers are on, be it Facebook, LinkedIn or TikTok, or others. More important than the platform you pick is that you pick multiple platforms because you don't own the platform. If you put content out on one platform and something happens to it, all of your credibility and time that you’ve spent on just that one platform could be gone. Make sure that you're thinking of at least two, maybe three, and that you're getting your content out of those so that you're not investing too much time into them all. The mission statement of Eric and his company is: Saving the world from boring, broken marketing. B2B companies often feel like they're in these boxes and different from others which are not true. He sold more houses and eventually, he went into public speaking. This is where he wanted to be in the long run. He then started teaching social media classes to hundreds of realtors. He kicked off his podcast while still working at a restaurant part-time. After some self-reflection, he found that he got the most fulfillment from spreading his message about building a wealthy, abundant life and helping other people his age get into entrepreneurship. John’s big tip is how to plan a year's worth of content in under 30 minutes, suggesting to start with your ideal Avatar. This will generate a giant list of things that people are looking for. The next step is to go on ChatGPT and generate those questions. It’s important to fact-check everything because ChatGPT is limited to the data being input. Take every question that you get from Answer the Public and then tell ChatGPT to create a 30 to 60-minute video outline for each video. From a long video, you now have short-form content to be repurposed that can hit so many platforms and be pretty much everywhere at the same time. He believes the main problem with social media is people get too caught up in creating the reel. They may have their funnel set up wrong. Starting off with the short form content, or a new TikTok, or a new short. When you want to market most efficiently, start from the top of the funnel, which is supposed to be long-form content. Sooner or later people are going to start getting sick of short-form content and look for the longer form of content. It's a double whammy because you’ll be prepping for the next stage of marketing, getting shorts from long-form videos, with less content that people are desiring right now.
