He has over 15 years of experience as an applied economist, having worked across the education, not-for-profit, private and government sectors. His research focuses on formulation and assessment of policies related to natural resource and environmental management. His work involves calculating the anticipated net returns on potential investment opportunities, policies and projects. Currently, his research interests are centred on the design and evaluation of effective diversity and inclusion policies to support inclusive natural resource management. On this episode we’ll be talking fire and prescribed burning in metro SA with ecologist Kirstin Abley. Spring in Adelaide means that the National Parks and Wildlife Service is kicking off its annual spring prescribed burn program in prep for this summer’s fire danger season. You’ll hear from Kirstin Abley who manages the Fire Science and Mapping Team at SA’s Department for Environment and Water. She is an ecologist with a background in threatened species, pest species management and fire ecology. The term ‘prescribed burning’ means the controlled use of fire on a particular area of landscape, and we’ll chat with Kirstin about its use in metro SA and its benefits from environmental to community safety. To kick of season 2 we are talking about a new pathway to change Adelaide’s tree trajectory. It’s Adelaide first metro-wide Urban Greening Strategy. Have your say: greenadelaide.sa.gov.au/projects/adelaide-greening-strategy Consultation open between 30 April and 28 June 2024. On behalf of the South Australian Government, we at Green Adelaide, released the draft strategy for consultation on 30 April to increase metropolitan Adelaide’s tree canopy, cool the city and boost biodiversity. This metro-wide Urban Greening Strategy will be used to bring together government, councils, non-government organisations, industry peak bodies, research institutions, Kaurna and the broader community to deliver practical greening actions that will help achieve a more liveable city. For this episode we are joined by Alison Collins to chat about the strategy. She is an urban planner with passion and expertise in creating more liveable, greener and water sensitive neighbourhoods. Alison has more than 20 years of experience in a wide range of state government, local government and private sector roles and currently she is Green Adelaide’s Team Leader of Planning, and she led the development the draft Urban Greening Strategy currently out for public consultation. On this ep, we are chatting about Yitpi Yartapuultiku, meaning in English 'the Soul of Port Adelaide', which is a new Aboriginal Cultural Space being built in the heart of Port Adelaide by the local council, the City of Port Adelaide Enfield. Yitpi Yartapuultiku aims to heal Country, bring the community together and provide a place for events and tourism. The space was collaboratively designed by the council alongside local Aboriginal Custodians, Wax Design and Ashley Halliday Architects, and it is expected to be open to the public in early 2025. Our host Melissa Martin is joined by Narungga man Rodney Welch from the City of Port Adelaide Enfield council and landscape architect Warwick Keates from Wax Design to chat about this project and the environmental considerations of this future Green Star certified building.
