Welcome to Part 3 of our series on Discernment! Today, we’re continuing our conversation about the Ignatian Rules of Discernment: specifically, we are talking about Rule 9 (and asking the very important question: are you buffering with Marvel movies?) and Rule 11. We go through the three principal reasons for desolation in Rule 9, and share how these experiences of desolation can show up in a non-spiritual way in coaching and counseling. We also talk about the times that God may allow consolation - some of us have experienced it as a lovely gift after a trial, while others have experienced it almost as a sweet treat or incentive at the beginning of a spiritual journey. How have you experienced it? We’d love to hear what you think of this topic. Leave a comment on the podcast, or shoot us a DM over on Instagram . And don’t forget to like and subscribe! 1:00:43Welcome to Part 2 of our series on Discernment! Today, we’re going back to the beginning and answering the question, “What does discernment mean, exactly?” Spoiler alert - it’s not just about your vocation! Discernment can cover everything from the life-changing to the mundane. We then continue our journey through the 14 Rules of Discernment of St. Ignatius. Last week we finished up by talking about consolation. This week, we’re talking about desolation (and yes, the Pits of Despair from Princess Bride did come up. Jake’s still embarrassed by John and Liz). We talked about Rules 4, 10, 6… we went where the Spirit led, and it was a great conversation. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did! We’d love to hear what you think of this topic. Leave a comment on the podcast, or shoot us a DM over on Instagram . And don’t forget to like and subscribe!…
Ready for Discernment 101? Today, we’re starting a series on how counselors, coaches, and spiritual directors can help you make decisions in your life - all through the lens of the Ignatian Rules of Discernment. And before that scares you away - Jake and Liz are John’s students in these episodes, so you’re in good company if you’re not familiar with the Rules. Today’s episode is a brief introduction to the Rules, followed by a discussion of the first three rules, and how they might show up in sessions with a counselor, a coach, or (naturally!) a spiritual director. If you’re struggling to know what God is calling you to do in your life right now, these episodes are for you. We’ve got three more episodes coming up to cover the other rules - stay tuned! We’d love to hear what you think of this topic. Leave a comment on the podcast, or shoot us a DM over on Instagram . And don’t forget to like and subscribe!…
We’re so excited to bring you this final episode in our series about who we are and what we do. Today, we’ve got Jake in the spotlight, as we highlight the glorious profession of counseling. If you’ve ever struggled with any kind of self-doubt (which is all of us, right?), this episode is for you. Jake takes John through an unrehearsed and very honest therapy session about the fear of being perceived as incompetent - this conversation was so good, none of us wanted it to end. We’re so glad you came along for these real-time sessions of spiritual direction, life coaching, and counseling. If they sparked your interest or you have questions, comment on the podcast, or shoot us a DM over on Instagram ! And don’t forget to like and subscribe!…
In today’s episode, we’re continuing our series highlighting each of our professions. And today, we’re giving you a ringside seat at a coaching session. Listen in as Liz coaches Jake through a thought he’s having about how others may be perceiving him. This session is so real and relatable… you may feel coached just by listening to it! If you like what you’re hearing, please like, comment, and subscribe to the podcast, and check us out over on Instagram !…
In the last episode, we did a quick review of what counseling, coaching, and spiritual direction are, and told you that we were going to do a series highlighting each profession in its own separate episode. And of course, we had to begin with God. ❤️ In this episode, you’re being invited to sit in on a completely unrehearsed, authentic spiritual direction session between spiritual director John Molloy and his volunteer directee, Elizabeth Saenz. If you’ve ever wondered what spiritual direction looks like at a practical level, you’re about to find out! And don’t forget to like and subscribe to the podcast, and check us out over on Instagram !…
Welcome to Episode 10!! To celebrate this momentous occasion, we’re doing a snappy little review of what counseling, coaching, and spiritual direction are, and we’re sharing three unique facts about each of these professions. And then of course we all argued about which one profession is best, and who you should call first. 😁 Who do you think has the most convincing argument?? This was a super fun episode. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did! We’re also finally giving some attention to Instagram , so you can check us out over there!…
What happens to coaching, counseling, or spiritual direction when you’re not in a crisis? In today’s episode, we’re discussing “ordinariness,” and what it can mean when things calm down and life is quiet. Are you healed, or just numb? If you’re healed, how can you use that peace wisely? And what would life look like if suffering never took you by surprise again? A few tools for “ordinary times”: Ask yourself, “Who do I want to be the next time life gets hard?” Celebrate your wins, confront resistance, and ask yourself: “What am I avoiding?” Stay strong and keep showing up, even when life is mundane and ordinary. Stay in touch! Instagram…
Where are you experiencing resistance? In today’s episode, we’re sharing the ways that resistance can appear in your life, and how to recognize and address it. Resistance can take many forms: it can look like stubbornness, fear, confusion, and even love! We talk about the importance of praying for the desire to do the things we feel called to do. And of course, we talk about the importance of tears, and asking for help: sometimes, you don’t know you’re resisting something until someone else helps you see it. A few tips to fight resistance this week: Let yourself play in resistance and in acceptance: which version of you do you like more? Identify the root cause of your resistance, and take it to the Lord Don’t beat yourself up for your resistance: let yourself cry.…

1:19:15This episode begins with the podcast’s first bad review! We’re making progress over here! Then we’re diving into superhero stories (specifically Spiderman) and discussing what it means to take a hero-sized “leap of faith” in your mental, emotional, and spiritual health journey. Taking ownership for that leap isn’t just intimidating - it’s outrageously freeing. A few of the leaps of faith we mention are Showing up scared Making a second appointment with your therapist/spiritual director/coach Being vulnerable Sharing the hard stuff - not just the wins We also tackle the problem of perfectionism, and discuss the beauty of embracing the messiness of real life. And don’t worry: we’re not just talking about you - we’re sharing our own personal pitfalls and perfectionistic tendencies as well. The best part of every superhero movie is when the hero tests his strength for the first time. If you haven’t had the equivalent of that moment in your life yet, maybe now is the time. Unleash your inner Spiderman: take a leap of faith with us. Resources mentioned: Saint Stories for Kids Podcast Liturgy of Domestic Church Life The Gift of Therapy…

1:02:11On this episode, Jake, John, and Liz get into a (heated? lively? opinionated?) discussion about romance in movies, and particularly what sets apart a 'boy' movie from a 'man' movie. It's a small miracle that this episode is only an hour long... they were really enjoying themselves.
