When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Learn more at www.lbi.org/kollisch . Exile is a production of the Leo Baeck Institute , New York | Berlin and Antica Productions . It’s narrated by Mandy Patinkin. Executive Producers include Katrina Onstad, Stuart Coxe, and Bernie Blum. Senior Producer is Debbie Pacheco. Associate Producers are Hailey Choi and Emily Morantz. Research and translation by Isabella Kempf. Sound design and audio mix by Philip Wilson, with help from Cameron McIver. Theme music by Oliver Wickham. Voice acting by Natalia Bushnik. Special thanks to the Kollisch family for the use of Eva’s two memoirs, “Girl in Movement” and “The Ground Under My Feet”, the Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College and their “Voices of Feminism Oral History Project”, and Soundtrack New York.…

Vanessa and Meagan, the ladies of Feminists Watching Action Movies (FWAM), agree on four things: (1) wine is delicious, (2) women are underrepresented or misrepresented in action movies, (3) action movies are awesome in spite of this, and (4) it is really hard to keep track of what day it is. Join them every other Monday as they discuss a new action movie.

×In a very special episode, FWAM celebrates America the only way it knows how, by talking about Independence Day on Independence Day. Vanessa and Meagan manage to discuss Bill Pullman's presidential failures and how they would react to an alien invasion despite spending much of the episode marveling at the combined action hero hotness of Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum.…
In their most heated/high stakes discussion yet, Meagan attempts to dismantle Vanessa's favorite childhood weather disaster film, Twister. Can the ladies have a mature debate about sexual harassment, the Bechdel test, and corporate sponsorship, or will the episode turn into an F5 of emotions and blind childhood loyalty?…
With a promotional poster watching over the FWAM studio, Meagan and Vanessa attempt to reconcile their joy and grief while discussing Furious 7. Topics include impractical footwear, women in STEM, and three rounds of FMK.
FWAM's first ever special guest, Kaitlyn, stops by to talk about the first ever Fast and Furious movie. While Meagan vows to defend her favorite franchise to the death, Vanessa and Kaitlyn discuss the male gaze and internalized misogyny. All of the ladies are subsequently sidetracked by Paul Walker, the logistics of driving a convertible without a hair elastic, and adults who eat tuna fish sandwiches with no crusts.…
Meagan and Vanessa are able to cover guns (literally and figuratively), animals as action heroes, stalking behavior, women's fashions, and very expensive family therapy in a third of the time it takes True Lies to do anything. Note: All of this is done "In Perfect Arabic."
After a (not so?) startling confession, Vanessa and Meagan dive in to The Rock, where they encounter a dynamic "car" chase, a disturbingly fragile chemical weapons storage system, and a sex scene so horrifying that they almost call their first Nicholas Cage action film quits at about 30 minutes in.
Meagan and Vanessa watch Assault on Precinct 13, which is apparently the only New Year's Eve themed action film in existence, and are forced to confront the Worst Female Character Ever. The bitter cold that actually exists in the FWAM studio creeps into a discussion about obvious plot twists, Ethan Hawke's affinity for butterfly tattoos, and the Worst Rap Ever.…
The Christmas season concludes with the Gold Standard in Christmas Action Movies, DIE HARD (all caps necessary). Vanessa and Meagan attempt to discuss the film's feminist issues, including working mothers and taking a man's name but are distracted by the inauguration of a new game, Vanessa's burning desire for Hans Gruber, and the difference between Family Ties and Family Matters.…

The Christmas season continues as Meagan and Vanessa watch The Long Kiss Goodnight, starring Real Life Feminist Hero Geena Davis. An intellectual and yet lighthearted discussion about what it means to be a "good" versus "bad" woman and Christmas decor as weaponry turns acrimonious when the ladies of FWAM begin to debate the film's various hairstyles.…
Just as Jesus was born on Christmas Day, FWAM was born during the Christmas season. In honor of these hallowed creations, Vanessa and Meagan attempt to determine if Batman Returns actually has a plot while they discuss female sexuality as power and penguins. Lots and lots of penguins.
