A new podcast is out to ail your case of the Mondays! Writer/Director ETA had a vision, and that vision turned into the incredibly compelling film “White Gaze.” This thought provokingly authentic parable about gentrification and appropriation is also an engaging horror film, and it took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette – Horror at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024. ETA pulled their lead actor Gema Rubi onto the podcast with them, which was extra fun because ETA literally pulled a non-actor friend into their film and it was a great choice. We had a lot of chatting the evening away on Zoom and I hope that everyone enjoys listening as much as we enjoyed talking. TGIF! Ty Clancey is a returning champion! Ty was on episode 366 to talk about his short film “Thank You For Staying,” an Official Selection at Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2021. After the podcast, he sent me his hilarious human-puppet hybrid comedy “Support.com and You!” and I loved it so much that we instantly threw it onto The Indie Channel. Ty came back to the podcast because in 2023 his beautiful, stylistic horror short “Drawn” was an Official Selection in Sherman Oaks Film Festival. In In classic Ty fashion, he didn’t realize that “Drawn” won the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette, Horror and Best Cinematography for Stephen Tringali until I told him on the podcast! (If memory serves, he didn’t know about the awards “Thank You For Staying” won until he came onto the podcast. Not gonna lie. I enjoy my conversations with Ty so much that I may have to think of an excuse to bring him on again even before he makes another film. He was on episode 366 in March 2023 and here he is, back on episode 504 in March 2025. Maybe I should that he come back for a March 2027 episode? What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Writer/director Gavin Gaitan brought his film “Down Town” to SOFF 2024 and took home four awards: Best in Fest – Feature Film Grand Jury Award – Best Feature Film – Comedy Grand Jury Award – Best Director – Feature Film – Gavin Gaitan Grand Jury Award – Best Screenplay – Feature Film – Gavin Gaitan I was truly blown away with Gavin’s film and I because I was not able to moderate his Q&A at the festival, I was thrilled to for the chance to have him on the podcast. And his follow-up 4 Questions didn’t disappoint either! A beautiful March Monday to you all! What I am about to type is the absolute truth. The first time I watched “Down Town,” the crime-comedy-adventure feature film from writer director Gavin Gaitan, I said out loud, alone in front of the TV, “Holy f***ing sh*t.” And I probably said it three to four times in a row, because Gavin’s film simply blew me away. I wasn’t alone! The selection jury for the Sherman Oaks Film Festival gave “Down Town” the Best In Fest award! In fact, at SOFF 2024, Gavin’s film took home four awards: Best in Fest – Feature Film Grand Jury Award – Best Feature Film – Comedy Grand Jury Award – Best Director – Feature Film – Gavin Gaitan Grand Jury Award – Best Screenplay – Feature Film – Gavin Gaitan By the way, I was extra excited that Gavin was among the first of the SOFF 2024 alumni to jump onto the podcast. I was moderating the Q&A’s in theater 7 when “Down Town” was playing in theater 8, so that I was not able to moderate Gavin’s Q&A and tell him all of the things that I admire about his film. That’s what I love about the Discover Indie Film podcast; it gives me a second chance to have a conversation the filmmakers whose Q&A’s I did not get to moderate. What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Lindsay Harbert directed the wonderful short film “Talia,” co-producing with lead actor Amy Shaughnessy. The film was an official selection at Film Invasion – Los Angeles in 2024, taking home the Programmers Prize for Exceptional Filmmaking. It’s hard to believe but today is the Discover Indie Film Podcast’s 500th Episode! The time has certainly flown and I marvel, looking back, on how many amazing and inspiring filmmakers I’ve been able to chat with since the very first episode in 2017. Many guests over the years have asked if I’d ever be willing to turn the mic around and allow someone to interview me. I decided this milestone was as good a moment as any to give in. I asked Discover Indie Film’s producer Karina to surprise me with a someoe who I’ve already talked to be my interviewer… I honestly had no idea who was going to interview me until I opened my front door! I want to thank everyone who listens and every single guest for making these 500 episodes possible! If you want to follow me on social media, I do my best to avoid all of them except… BlueSky. Click here to follow me on BlueSky! Finally, a quick photo credit to Chris Hall, an award-winning director and producer who loves photography and asked me to sit for some portraits. I was delighted to use this photo he took of me with my very first podcast mic! Chris Hall on Instagram Christopher J. Happy Monday, Everyone! We have a great interview for you today. But you’re going to have to wait until Friday for this filmmaker’s follow-up 4Qs because Wednesday is the 500TH episode of Discover Indie Film and we have a very special episode, or at least I hope so. I’ve been convinced by many of you over the years to flip the mic and allow a previous guest interview me. In fact, I don’t even know WHO will be showing up on my doorstep to interview me (it’s been arranged by my producer) so we’ll truly see how that goes! But back to today! Lindsay Harbert directed the wonderful short film “Talia,” co-producing with lead actor Amy Shaughnessy. The film was an official selection at Film Invasion – Los Angeles in 2024, taking home the Programmers Prize for Exceptional Filmmaking. Lindsay was not able to attend the festival, which means that I was extra-enthusiastic about recording this podcast because she could not take part in the festival Q&A for “Talia.” Lindsay did not disappoint! She is a very talented writer and director, and an equally fun person to talk to IG @taliashortfilm _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Discover Indie Film Website – Instagram – Facebook – BlueSky The INDIE Channel The INDIE Channel Website – Instagram – Facebook – TikTok…
What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. In 2024, Adam Linkenhelt’s film “The Unreliables” was at FILA 2024, earning Adam and his co- writer Jen Robyn Jacobs the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Screenplay – Drama. Not only that, in 2016, Adam’s film “Passports” was at FILA AND Adam directed two films OTHER that were submitted to FILA’s sister-festival, Sherman Oaks Film Festival, also in 2024. And to top it off Adam is now the festival runner of Anchorage Film Festival in Alaska. So if you didn’t listen to Wednesday’s interview with Adam, I highly recommend you do! I was definitely excited to chat with Adam and that includes finding out what his 4Q picks would be! @AdamLinkenhelt anchoragefilmfestival.org _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Discover Indie Film Website – Instagram – Facebook – BlueSky The INDIE Channel The INDIE Channel Website – Instagram – Facebook – TikTok…
A Wonderful Wednesday to you all! Filmmaker Adam Linkenhelt should have been on this podcast a loooooong time ago. Why do I say that? Because not only did Adam have two films in the festivals that I run in 2024, way back in 2016 a film that he co-directed was in the first ever festival that our team presented when Film Invasion Los Angeles (FILA) debuted. Time for the list? In 2016, Adam’s film “Passports” was at FILA. Then in 2024 his film “The Unreliables” was at FILA 2024, earning Adam and his co- writer Jen Robyn Jacobs the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Screenplay – Drama. And get this. Adam directed two films that were submitted to FILA’s sister-festival, Sherman Oaks Film Festival, also in 2024. We had to pick one, even though both were great, but right now I will just give a shoutout to both “Rattled” and “A Close Encounter.” Not only does Adam always do great work, but he told me at FILA 2024 that he had accepted the role of festival runner at the Anchorage Film Festival in Alaska! I was delighted that he wanted to pick my brain a little bit for it and I could not have been happier to see the great things happening up in Anchorage while I was busy at SOFF. Needless to say, we spent more than a little time talking “festival running” in this podcast. Consider this a chance to see behind the festival curtain a little! @AdamLinkenhelt anchoragefilmfestival.org _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Discover Indie Film Website – Instagram – Facebook – BlueSky The INDIE Channel The INDIE Channel Website – Instagram – Facebook – TikTok…

Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone! Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, I have a new DiscoverIndieFilm Podcast for you! Nick Livanos wrote and directed the feature film “All the Wrong Ingredients” that was an official selection at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024, taking home the Grand Jury Award for Best Feature Film – Comedy. Nick is based in Tennessee and this podcast was our second Zoom, as we also did a Zoom for his FILA 2024 Q&A. Nick took a very interesting path into filmmaking and hones his skills as both a filmmaker and an Associate Professor at Southern Adventist University. I’m pretty sure that we offered each other guest rooms if either of us is ever in the other’s home town. It might be from the fact that we all went through lockdown together, but at this point I think that I’m a good Zoom or two away from considering someone a friend! Happy Monday, Everyone! I’m wishing every a great start to the week and hoping that this interview helps with that. Producer and actor Sof Puchley brought her short film “ID EST” to Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024 and took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film – Sci-Fi, as well as earning her director Shayda Frost the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Director – Sci-Fi. This stunningly beautiful and extremely engaging film was one of my favorites last year, as I’m a huge SciFi fan and love when someone like Sof brings a fresh perspective to the genre. If you’re curious, that’s pronounced “ihd-ehst.” Sof’s creative journey is a bold and courageous one. She has done things in her life, both as a student and professional, that most people I’ve met would not dare to try. But I will not go into it further because you need to listen to the interview. What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Writing and directing team Mike Sorce and Matthew Kic presented their incredible short film “Manifesto” in the Sherman Oaks Film Festival 2023 as a World Premiere and took home the Grand Jury Award – Best Screenplay – Short Film, and the Filmmakers Award – Outstanding Short Film – Drama. Happy Hump Day , Folks! One thing I’ve been noticing for the last few decades — hey, I first got involved in indie film in the late 90’s — is that scripts with two names on them are almost always better than those with one. No offense to the infinite number of solo writers out there, but I cannot help but notice that the maxim “two minds are better than one” especially applies to screenwriting. It just might apply to film directing as well. Writing and directing team Mike Sorce and Matthew Kic sat down with me at the DIF mic’s and shared the very interesting story of how these two came out to L.A. from Arizona and Texas, ended up in the same mail room, teamed up to write together, and then reached the pinnacle of their careers when the Sherman Oaks Film Festival presented the World Premiere of their short film “Manifesto” in 2023. Mainfesto took home the Grand Jury Award – Best Screenplay – Short Film, and the Filmmakers Award – Outstanding Short Film – Drama. Sarcasm aside, Mike and Matt have accomplished a lot of great things since their arrivals in L.A. and it was an absolute delight to have them onto the podcast to share their stories.
