On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. The We Live Film Podcast airs every Thursday evening from 5pm to 6pm PST on the Red Guerilla Network. Scott Menzel also known as MovieManMenzel hosts the podcast along with his wife Ashley Menzel and several others including Chad Gleason (MovieManChad), Daniel Rester, Gabe Alcantara, and more. Each week features several unique segments including “What to Watch”, “Trailer Talk”, and “Blu-Ray: Buy It-Rent It-Skip It.” In addition, there is usually a special celebrity guest at least once per month. We Live Film started as a website back in 2011 and later that year became a successful YouTube channel with contributors from all across the globe. Over the past 4 years, We Live Film has become home to several weekly segments including Romantic Movie Monday, Tuesday Terrors, Redbox It Tuesday, Top Five Wednesday, Horror Thursday, Spoiler Saturday, and Streaming Sunday. We Live Film is a community for those who are passionate about every type of film, from the micro-budget indie horror to the big-name blockbusters. That’s right, unlike others we love our superhero movies just as much as we love our art house flicks. Throughout the year, We Live Film attends several major film events across the globe including Sundance Film Festival, South by Southwest, San Diego Comic-Con International, Toronto International Film Festival, AFI, and various others. Our community provides news articles, written and video reviews, interviews, Q&A coverage, opinion pieces, daily video segments (showcasing a different personality every day of the week), and much more. We don’t discriminate against any film lover, no matter how young or old. You are always welcome to become a filmster and we personally like to think of ourselves as the island of misfit film fanatics. Our vast and varied knowledge of film gives our film family a very unique set of voices that very few websites have. Film isn’t just a hobby for us, but rather a lifestyle. Some Watch It, We Live It.
