- 1975 - Queen released "Bohemian Rhapsody". It was written by Freddie Mercury for the band's 1975 album A Night at the Opera and it was reportedly the most expensive single ever made at the time of its release, although the exact cost of production cannot be determined.
- 1992 - “End of the Road” by Boyz II Men is the No. 1 song on the Hot 100 for the 12th consecutive week, breaking the record.
- Birthdays: Vanilla Ice is 55

- 1970 - The Festfolk Quartet, which later becomes ABBA, played their first-ever concert at a Gothenburg, Sweden restaurant.
- 1994 - Nirvana's MTV Unplugged in New York album, taken from a performance a year earlier, is finally released. The album tops the charts in many countries, including the US, UK and Australia.
- Birthdays: Country singer Lyle Lovett is 65.

- 1920 - KDKA in Pittsburgh becomes the first commercially licensed radio station in the United States. They are not the first station on the air, but the first to get the broadcast license.
- 2016 - Taylor Swift was the highest-paid woman in music, according to Forbes' annual list, having earned more than double her nearest competitor Adele.
- Birthdays: Nelly is 48

- 1990 - "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice became the first rap record to top the U.S. singles chart.
- 1998 - Britney Spears, 16, releases her first single, "...Baby One More Time." Three months later, it goes to #1 in America.
- Birthdays: Adam Ant is 68.

- 1978 - Boston plays in the city of Boston for the first time, a sold-out show at the Boston Garden.
- 1988 - The U2 documentary Rattle And Hum opens worldwide.
