This week on The Black Light Mass Incarceration Show, we embark on a profound exploration of the prison system's complexities with our distinguished guest, Vincent Schiraldi. With a background deeply rooted in the criminal justice system, Vincent offers a unique perspective that sheds light on the issues profoundly impacting our communities.

Throughout the episode, we confront the harsh reality that too many prison systems predominantly rely on enforcement strategies, often overlooking the critical aspect of engagement—both with the incarcerated and the communities that surround them. Vincent Schiraldi argues that it's time to reevaluate this one-sided approach.

Drawing from his wealth of experience, Vincent contends that striking a balance between enforcement and genuine engagement is the key to stabilizing the prison system. The establishment of connected working relationships among all stakeholders, from law enforcement to social services, is a crucial step toward achieving this equilibrium.

Vincent Schiraldi's expertise in these matters is further underscored by his book, 'Mass Supervision, Probation, Parole, and the Illusion of Safety and Freedom.' Throughout the episode, we explore the profound insights and solutions he offers within the pages of this important work.

Vincent has served as commissioner of the New York City Department of Probation, commissioner of the New York City Department of Correction, and director of juvenile corrections in Washington, DC. He has also been a senior research fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School and co-founded the Columbia University Justice Lab as well as the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice and the Justice Policy Institute. He has written extensively for outlets ranging from the New York Times to The Marshall Project. He is currently Secretary of the Department of Juvenile Services in his home state of Maryland.

Schiraldi’s credentials:

Former commissioner of one of the nation’s largest probation departments (New York City’s)

Former commissioner for one of the nation’s most notorious jail systems (Rikers Island)

Former director of juvenile corrections in Washington, DC.

A seasoned media expert: previous interviews include NBC News with Lester Holt, NPR All Things Considered, NPR All Things Considered,
