Oxford High School endured a horrific tragedy in November 2021. While we don’t want to gloss over that event, it’s not the focus of this episode. Four kids lost their lives. Several others were injured. In the aftermath, the State of Michigan criminally charged James and Jennifer Crumbley with involuntary manslaughter for their son’s actions that took the lives of four of his classmates. This is the first time (that we’re aware of) that a criminal prosecution like this has occurred in the United States.

In this episode we provide some background and context about the underlying circumstances and then discuss the Crumbley trials. Why did the State decide to charge these parents? We’ll unpack the details but leave it up to you to decide whether parents like the Crumbleys should face criminal consequences.
