The CDC and FDA are investigating a particular lot of Moderna’s vaccine after California paused distribution after fewer than 10 recipients at a clinic in San Diego experienced severe allergic reactions and required medical attention within 24 hours of being vaccinated. The lot in question included more than 330,000 doses distributed to 287 providers statewide.
They get released, but are they better? A study shows nearly a third of people discharged from hospitals in England after being treated for Covid-19 were readmitted within five months – and almost one in eight died. The study also found a higher risk of problems developing in a range of organs after hospital discharge in those under 70 and ethnic minorities.
The CDC is making it mandatory starting January 26 that all air travelers entering the US have proof of a negative test taken within three days of their flight. The burden will be placed on airlines to verify passengers’ test results.
An independent panel has said Chinese officials could have applied public health measures more forcefully a year ago to curb Covid-19 and criticized the World Health Organization for delays in declaring an international emergency. The experts doing the review called for reforms to the World Health Organization.
It looks like Starbucks is going to help its home state of Washington streamline the logistics of its vaccination efforts. No, that does not mean you can get a vaccine with your latte at Starbucks. But the company has assigned 11 employees with expertise in labor and deployment, operations, and research and development to work full time on the rollout.
In the United States cases were up 3%, deaths up 26%, and hospitalizations up 3% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since January 8th.
There are now 9,666,071 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, Florida, New York, Arizona, and Georgia.
The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Montour, PA. Morgan, KY. Hall, TX. Forest, PA. La Salle, TX. Webb, TX. Val Verde, TX. Hyde, NC. Foard, TX. And Weston, WY.
The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Arizona, Rhode Island, California, Oklahoma, and South Carolina.
The infection reproduction rate is currently highest in Washington, Virginia, and Kentucky. The states with the lowest reproduction rate are West Virginia, Indiana, and Illinois.
There’ve been a total 398,977 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.67%.
The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: New York 160. California 146. Florida 136. Pennsylvania 102. Texas 94. Ohio 80. Connecticut 76. Illinois 68. Georgia 64. And Massachusetts 53.
Globally, cases were up 10%, and deaths up 23% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since January 11.
Globally, there are 25,329,527 active cases.
The five countries with the most new cases: the United States 142,022. The U.K. 37,535. Spain 33,800. Brazil 24,139. And Russia 22,857.
There have now been 2,039,283 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.
