The oppressive heat of summer in Edo Japan had people longing for the night and the relief brought by the setting sun. In the cool darkness, people would gather and play Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai. This ritualistic parlour game had participants telling 100 ghostly tales with the intention of evoking a supernatural event.
