“Relationships between roots, the stay-green phenotype, and agronomic performance in barley and wheat grown in semi-arid conditions” with Dr. Maryse Bourgault and Jessica Williams.

Roots are an important factor in drought-resistance as they are the primary way by which plants uptake the water they need to survive. However, measuring roots can be a difficult, time-consuming, and destructive process. In this episode, we discuss Dr. Maryse Bourgault and Jessica William’s work to better understand how drought, root systems, and other traits relate by partnering across studies in greenhouses and the field to study traits that get to the roots of drought resistance.

Tune in to learn:

· How root system traits relate to drought resistance

· Which root traits work best for different cereal and pulse crops

· How to make a root roll-up

· How minirhizotrons can help gather root trait data without damaging the plants and soil
