On this episode of the GRRRL Talk, Kortney and Tahverlee discuss the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show and the many reactions that people had based on their personal perceptions. Many women in the Latin American community were proud of JLo and Shakira for representing their culture on such a significant stage and demonstrating to many girls that they can achieve their dreams.

If you found yourself triggered by JLo and Shakira’s halftime show, it is important for you to look inside yourself and trace the roots of your reaction. One of the key conversations that has come out of this incident (or non-incident, depending on your perspective) is the repression of women throughout history in comparison to the empowerment that women have been claiming as their own over the past few decades, whether the world is ready for women in their new roles or not. Some media outlets even weighed in on the topic, mostly negatively, prompting many calls for the media to report both sides of the story.

The GRRRL movement: to see women as sisters and not competition. While many compliments can be short-lived and leave us wanting more, the right compliment at the right time can be life-changing for us and those around us. Living your truth and sharing your story with others can have a positive compound impact, just like passing judgment can have a negative compound impact, so love yourself first and let that flow out to your love of others. Rather than complaining about the problems you see, talk about and be a part of the solutions, first by doing the work on yourself and then by being respectful of the beliefs and lifestyles of others.
