At Tesla's AI day a few years ago Elon Musk unveiled Optimus, Tesla's humanoid robot program. This has quickly become an even more exciting long-term bull thesis than even the Cyercab, as Elon says it will make Tesla the world's most valuable company by far. In this Bros, Brews and Big Ideas I sit down with Aidan to analyze Tesla's Optimus, and the much hyped Figure Robot, which has created a splash on social media and is let by Bret Adcock. A very bittersweet moment. With 90% of my personal capital invested in Tesla & SpaceX (Elon Musk companies), and needing cash to pay rent/my bills in the next 6 months I made the extremely difficult decision to sell a chunk (about 10%) of my Tesla holdings. This comes at a time where I'm more bullish on the companies long term future than ever with Cybercab and Optimus. But with the reality of the world's geopolitical situation and Elon's government involvement ... I realized I would feel a lot better to sell some stock now to have cash rather than be forced to sell in 6 months at a potentially lower price. As always this is not financial advice, just me documenting my investing journey. My support for Tesla, it's employees, and mission is stronger than ever, but personal financial freedom and living stress free is the most important thing in life. After a two weeks off-grid I was rattled to see news across social media of Tesla protests and general Elon Musk haters. Elon Musk sounded insanely focused and dialed in as he explained Tesla is planning to launch an self-driving robotaxi service in Austin in June of THIS YEAR. He also clarified he expects Tesla to launch full self driving in many regions across the US in 2025. Tesla stock closed the day at $428 per share, representing a valuation of $1.5T. Reflecting on this milestone, I wanted to analyze what Tesla's financials were and what would be needed to justify a valuation of this level, and beyond. My high level theory is, Tesla is in a very unique spot. The core business is likely to generate $9B in GAAP operating income for the full year of 2024. Based on today's closing price, that is a valuation of 167X price/earnings. A little steep. Buying at today's $1.5T price implies an expected valuation of $3-5T in the future (a potential double or triple on your money). To justify this, Tesla will need about $100B in earnings. So that is my questions? When does Tesla hit this number? How fast do Cybercab & Optimus contribute to the company's earnings and cashflow? Tesla's Q4 2024 deliveries are hot off the press. Tesla delivered 495,000 cars in Q4, and just under 1.8M for the full year. Additionally, it was a huge quarter and year for energy storage with deployments hitting 11GWh in Q4. The stock was down about 6% on these numbers, after its huge run up in the final months of 2024. Rivian Q3 results have arrived! Revenues dipped below $1B/quarter for the first time since 2023, and gross margins got even worse to negative 45%. The company is still guiding for positive gross margins in Q4 2024 which would be a major win for the company, and I'd be extremely impressed if they hit. My biggest concern when looking at the stock is the sharecount is increasing at an accelerating pace. Up to 1,014M shares in Q3, up 6.5% in just a year. This could accelerate if the share price doesn't go up, causing a dilution spiral.…
Airbnb Q3 2024 results are hot off the press! Revenue grew 10% to $3.7B (all time high), and the company is planning to launch 1-2 new $1B+ revenue businesses next year, and every year going forward. On the conference call Brian Chesky kept comparing Airbnb today to Amazon when they were selling just books. Chesky sees the company expanding well beyond travel into new products and services. Donald Trump has just won the US Presidential election. Tesla stock is up 15% to its highest level in more than a year. What does this new American era mean for Tesla investors? A lot of the regulatory scrutiny (FSD, Elon's Pay Package) seems like it will go away. The regulatory approval path for FSD / Cybercab got way easier. And mainly, I think investors are just hyped because it means Elon and Tesla will be left alone to execute on their massive vision. Tesla stock soared 21% today after a monster Q3 earnings beat. It was a big day for the portfolio. But something wasn't right ... I was still stressing because of my Airbnb options position. So I had to make the tough call to sell my options for a small gain and roll the position into plain, old, boring Airbnb equity. Tesla's earnings are hot off the press! Revenue of $25.5B (+2.3%) and profits of $1.6B. On the earnings call CEO Elon Musk stressed the importance of FSD, and how its set to transform Tesla's business. He confirmed the Robotaxi unveiling will be on 10/10, and provided an update on Optimus, saying it will begin Version 1 production in 2025, and Version 2 production to outside customers in 2026. Overall the call was a little boring. We are in a quiet/chill period for Tesla until 2025 when the cheaper model & robotaxi launch. Back on the lake in 90+ degree heat in Seattle pondering Tesla stocks zoom to $250+ per share, and $800B valuation. It's going to be a rough 2 years for Rivian. I decided to sell my tiny position, as I think dilution is coming. Rivian has only ~$9B in cash, and is burning $1.4B per quarter. The company can't make money on it's $100K R1S & R1T, so I'm not convinced they will be able to make a profit on the $45,000 R2. I love the company and brand, but the business is really struggling right now, and I'm worried shareholders could get screwed if dilution ramps up. Rivian has officially unveiled it's R2, a $45,000 electric vehicle set to debut in 2026. It was an epic unveiling event, and very highly anticipated by the whole EV community. Rivian didn't just unveil it's R2, but CEO/Founder RJ Scaringe also unveiled a totally new, even smaller R3 platform. This was super unexpected, and paves way for the ultra-performance R3X. Tesla drama over the long-weekend as Elon Musk posted on X about his ownership and voting control of the company. Now that he's completed his 2018 compensation package, Elon isn't being paid to run Tesla, and has below 25% voting control. Now he's made it clear he wants at least 25% of the voting shares, but a Delaware court case is holding up his discussions with the board of directors to make this happen. Tesla recorded $500M+ in gross profit from its Energy and Services (Supercharging) segments in Q3 2023. Elon Musk noted how strong energy gross margins were on the call, and insinuated strength in these businesses will continue. I think this is a super exciting development for Tesla investors as the company can smooth out cyclicality in it's automotive business with consistent profits from its Energy and Services + Other segments. As the Supercharger network is opened up to more companies like Ford and Rivian, this could become a major profit driver for the company.…
Rivian has successfully launched it's R1T, R1S and delivery van products, they are amazing. But financially, the company is in a difficult situation. Cash burn is still above $1B per quarter, and the company will need billions more to fund the R2 factory. Going forward it will be fascinating to see the company walk the tightrope between conserving cash, growth and the long march towards profitability. Starlink has officially announced that it has crossed 2.3M users across 70 countries. A rough financial estimate of $100/month/user in revenue means Starlink is at $2.8B in annual recurring revenue. If you add in hardware revenue, we're likely well over a $3B run-rate. Starlink is fully owned by SpaceX, and is rumored to be going for an IPO in the near future. From urban package deliveries, to minbus ride-sharing, an autonomous Tesla Robovan has massive potential. Rivian's electric delivery van concept has delivered 10,000 units to Amazon and on the cusp of expanding to numerous other companies (like AT&T). Elon Musk has hinted at a highly configurable robovan concept for people and cargo in the past. If he does indeed launch it, I think it would crush Rivian's model and could quickly ramp to 100,000s of units per year between package delivery, camper vans and urban ridesharing/minibus. Rivian's electric delivery van (EDV) business has quietly been making some huge moves. It generated over $400M in revenue in Q3 alone, and just signed a new partnership with AT&T. Now that Amazon doesn't have exclusive rights to buy the van Rivian will begin to do pilot projects with a bunch of new customers.
