Will you forsake the world-- This was Jesus' own message to the -great crowds- that followed him- you cannot follow me and be fully invested in the cares of the world -Matt. 13-2, 22-. You can love the ways of this world or you can love the Lord. But not both -1 John 2-15-. Jesus' brother James put the point starkly- -Whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God- -4-4-. Uniting with the church of Jesus requires you to forsake the world.--So it makes sense that Jesus often spoke to great crowds about the cost of discipleship. Great crowds were literally -traveling with Jesus- -Luke 15-25 NIV-. The crowds were like groupies following a famous singer- they were fans of Jesus. It is to these admirers that Jesus addresses his hard sayings.--Jesus purposefully thinned the crowd. That seems backward to modern evangelicals. You want a crowd-large groups evidence success, right-- Not necessarily. Jesus isn't looking for crowds but converts- not admirers but adherents.--To follow Jesus and forsake the world we must do at least three things.
