Matt Lieto catches up with the current IRONMAN Pro Series points leader, American Matt Hanson. A new father at 39, Hanson talks about what fuels him as an athlete, and the importance of understanding your ‘why’ when chasing big triathlon goals. Hanson made the leap from age-grouper to professional in 2011, earning his pro card just to see if he could do it. Since then, he’s earned six IRONMAN 70.3 titles and six IRONMAN wins. Hanson shares where he learned his work ethic, how he balances a full life as a coach and father with his own athletic ambitions, and why it’s essential to focus more on process and less on outcome. Hanson also talks about his training prep for the upcoming Athletic Brewing IRONMAN Lake Placid with IRONMAN Pro Series current #2 Jackson Laundry, and his strategy for ending the season atop the leaderboard.
