In this chapter God promises that He will be faithful to Solomon’s prayers, and that His presence will fill the temple. But, the promise is conditional: Solomon’s request was that God would forgive the people’s sin and guide them. God’s answer was ‘if you walk with me in integrity of heart and godliness…and obey my commands, decrees and regulations, then I will establish the throne of your dynasty over Israel for ever’.

We see this pattern throughout scripture. For example, Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give and you will receive.

Hebrews 11 shows that without faith it’s impossible to please God. But faith comes from hearing the word of God. Here we see that action is also necessary. It’s not enough simply to hear, we must also obey: John 14:15 says ‘if you love me, obey my commands. In 1 Kings 9: 6-7 God warns Solomon ‘if you disobey my commands and worship other gods, I’ll cut off Israel, reject the temple and make Israel a mockery in front of all nations.

In following chapters we’ll see that Solomon doesn’t treat what God has said to him seriously.
