In chapter 11, Solomon’s weaknesses are totally exposed. God raises up enemies who are both internal and external to Solomon’s Kingdom. We see how ruthless God is when we don’t obey His commands. It’s quite terrifying – He’s a jealous God. But when He declares war, it’s not on us, but on the things we’re holding onto, or are holding onto us.

In this chapter we see that ignoring God’s warnings comes at our own peril. He warned Solomon to obey His commands, but Solomon’s heart was divided. Unlike his father, King David, he didn’t delight in the Lord, which left him vulnerable to other temptations. At the beginning of the chapter we learn that Solomon ‘clung’ to his foreign wives in love. The wives that God had warned him not to take because they would turn his heart.

What do we cling to? What or who do we turn to in moments of insecurity and doubt? Those are the things that become our idols, and divide our heart. The best way to get rid of my idols is to ask God to help me to delight in Him…
