A Moscow court has sentenced Gene Spector, a Russian-born U.S. citizen and former chairman of the board of directors of Medpolymerprom Group, to 15 years in a high-security prison after finding him guilty of espionage, Interfax reported on December 24.
The trial was held behind closed doors due to the involvement of classified materials. The court only released the introductory and dispositive portions of the verdict.
The court also upheld a 14-million-ruble ($140,000) fine that had previously been imposed on Spector in a separate case, TASS reported, citing the verdict’s text.
The sentence was handed down in conjunction with a previous conviction, in which Spector was found guilty of mediating bribes involving Anastasia Alekseyeva, an aide to former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich. In September 2022, Spector was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for that case. He was arrested again in August 2023 in connection with the espionage charges.
