Han smittades av Bruckners Wagnerentusiasm. 1876 bjöds han in som assistent till Bayreuthfestspelens första säsong. Han en betydelsfull dirigent i Bayreuth under tiden efter Wagners död och dirigerade Bayreuth-premiärerna av flera Wagneroperor.
