Welcome back to Thesis Focus! This week Dorothy Settles joins us to present her research on the use of police violence and state force to access natural resources on Wet’suwet’en Territory in British Columbia, Canada. Dorothy had experience in activism, and used the opportunity of writing a thesis to further dissect the tensions and conflict around natural resources in Canada, specifically between the police and indigenous resistance. She raises important questions about the relationship between the state and the oil and gas industry, the evolution of policing methods and the significance of resistance movements.

For those of you who want to learn more, here are some articles Dorothy recommends on the topic: The C-IRG: the resource extraction industry’s best ally by Molly Murphy; Behind the Thin Blue Line: Meet a secretive arm of the RCMP in B.C. by Brett Forester.
