Minister Onlilove Chika Alston talks about her experiences being in the foster care system as a young girl, how she found her faith, and how instituting a “sabbath” saved her life. Onleilove shares her love of service and how being reunited with her tribe in Africa, after slavery separated her family generations ago, restored her dignity as an African American. Onleilove also shares some of the new genetic findings which support the claims of jewish ancestry from some African tribes people - painting a new picture of biblical diversity. This episode is a fresh and inspiring look at faith, love and what it means to be part of the shared human experience.

“Rest is Radical”

If you were a newly freed slave person and you had no control over your work schedule, and now you're being told that the creator of the universe is giving you a day that you had to rest. This would be such a gift. My family... were held here as slaves, I have ancestors who could not rest. My grandmother, who took me out of foster care as a young woman, picked cotton as a sharecropper. So for me when I rest, I'm stopping but I'm also making a radical stance that says my body as a black woman is important and it deserves rest, and I'm not only what I can produce, I'm who I am. I have inherent worth, even if I'm not producing. I understand that in this world, there are people who cannot do “Sabbath” whether they're essential workers during COVID, or whether they're people who are undocumented that have to come to work whenever their boss tells them to. We're not yet at a place where every single human being can have a day of rest but I hope and pray for the day where we can.
