Dr. Ben Corn talks about one of the defining moments in his early life - the death of his father due to cancer. Ben shares how his understanding of the role of a physician changed from being just a care provider to being a “hope provider” helping patients to create and sustain hope even in terminal situations. Ben also talks about his life changing move to Israel and the personal growth that came out of the uncertainty of the experience. Ben shares his thoughts and findings on the mechanics of hope and happiness, and the fine line between hope and fear as it relates to personal agency.

“The Role of The Physician”

I truly had an epiphany… I realized that I thought I went to medical school, to cure cancer (prostate cancer.) But I realized that nothing had changed since that phone call. And that, my mission was a completely different one. I wanted to be a cancer physician and be up on the latest treatments and know how to treat patients with that dimension of knowing how to communicate. I think “the” role of a physician to create and sustain hope...it is what it's all about. And that's driven my research for the last three decades.
