Being a landlord in Ontario comes with its own unique set of challenges. From slow eviction processes to dealing with damages left by tenants, these problems can often result in significant financial losses. Kayla Andrade, my guest for this week's episode, sheds light on these issues. Kayla's journey into understanding landlord-tenant relationships started close to home in her childhood community in Newfoundland. Her early experiences living in government housing offered her a unique insight into the complexities of property management. When the property market in Ontario became volatile, Kayla sought opportunities elsewhere, even if it meant stepping out of her comfort zone. She noticed that different provinces like Newfoundland were less bureaucratically complicated and more landlord-friendly. In 2010, Kayla founded Ontario Landlords Watch, a platform aimed at helping landlords, property managers, realtors, and paralegals navigate the intricate web of regulations that govern property ownership and tenancy. Her organization works as both an educational resource and a lobbying force, pushing for reform in housing legislation for the betterment of the private real estate sector. In this episode, we discuss the following:
  • The complexities inherent in Ontario's landlord landscape and better navigating them.
  • Understanding of the slow eviction process operational in Ontario and the reasons behind its sluggish nature.
  • Bill 97's influence on rent payment strategies and its financial implications.
  • Significance of scrupulous tenant screening and the role of credit history in securing reliable occupants.
  • Essential advocacy programs and supportive measures available to landlords in Ontario.
