In this episode I talk to Dr Sophie Brock, a Motherhood Studies Sociologist based in Sydney, Australia.

I've been absorbing Sophie's wisdom via podcasts and social media for a few years, so it's a pleasure and an honour to have her on the podcast for this juicy conversation.

Sophie's work in Motherhood Studies is fascinating and incredibly validating. Sophie is also a single Mum to her daughter.

I HIGHLY recommend listening to (and/or sharing) this podcast whether you're expecting, or a mother to children of any age.

In this episode we speak about:

  • the difference between motherING and motherHOOD
  • the 'Fish Tank of Motherhood Model'
  • what we are conditioned to think a 'Mother' is and the 'Perfect Mother Myth'
  • a personal share of mine; feelings about having another baby or not
  • grief in motherhood and how all emotions are valid yet not widely accepted in society
  • maternal rage; feeling it, acknowledging it and expressing it
  • not having Mum guilt
  • how different mothering can look for each family; disabilities, neurodivergence and much more
  • Sophie's offerings and breaking down the learning

Themes: motherhood, mothering, parenting, maternal rage, disabilities and neurodivergence, fatherhood

We also mention the work of Minna Dubin and Adrienne Rich.

To see more of Sophie's work and about her resources and courses see here on her website. And connect with Sophie here on Instagram.
