On this bright and beautiful June day, we celebrate National Selfie Day. Yes, today is the day to capture your best self from your favorite angle, and perhaps with that perfect filter. sigh...
Today we are doing something a little different... we are putting two quotes up against each other and I'll let you decide which one is true.
Our first quote of the day is from the famed astronomer, Nicolaus Copernicus, who once said,
"The world does not revolve around you."
A humbling reminder from the man who figured out that Earth isn't the center of the universe.
Imagine the shock back then!
It’s like someone telling you your selfie isn’t the best thing on the internet - it kind of makes you think twice about posting that selfie now... but wait...
Our second quote today comes from the modern-day marketing genius, Joe Polish, who turns Copernicus’s notion on its head with,
"The world does revolve around you..."

You may have heard the phrase: “The world doesn’t revolve around you.” But, if it doesn’t revolve around you, then who does it revolve around? It’s YOUR life. And YOUR world actually DOES revolve around YOU. It really does. Most of the time you are thinking about YOUR life, YOUR family, YOUR desires, YOUR dreams, if YOU got enough sleep, if YOU’RE bored, if YOU’RE hungry… You’re thinking about YOUR life.
In order to do good Marketing, you need to understand your Client’s world revolves around THEM. They are thinking about THEMSELVES.
Confusing, isn’t it? Who is right... Copernicus or Polish?
Maybe I can feel good about posting that selfie, after all.
Let’s untangle this paradox together.
On National Selfie Day, we can look at both of these quotes and find a balanced perspective.
Copernicus reminds us that we are part of a much larger cosmos. Our problems, while significant to us, are but a tiny speck in the vastness of the universe. It’s a gentle nudge to keep our ego in check.
I mean, you can expand your view to a point that makes yourself absolutely insignificant... when you consider an infinite universe, and infinite timeline and infinite dimensions or Multi-Verse or alternate realities. That pretty much makes your tiny slice of existence mean nothing doesn't it... well NO. But I get the point...
When you’re lining up that perfect selfie, remember there’s a whole infinite everything out there beyond your lens.
On the flip side, Joe Polish’s quote suggests that your world – your experiences, your emotions, your perceptions – is uniquely yours. It does revolve around you in the sense that you have the power to shape your reality, to make choices, and to influence the course of your life. That selfie you take is a snapshot of your world at that moment, a reflection of your individuality.
So, how do we reconcile these two seemingly contradictory ideas? It’s simple: balance.
Embrace your significance without forgetting your place in the grand scheme. Take pride in who you are and what you can do, but also remain humble and connected to the bigger picture.
Remember, the economic law of scarcity. If you zoom out wide enought to make your own life a tiny speck of nothing in the grand scheme of things then that makes YOU very scarce. In economics that means you are MORE valuable, not less.
Today, as you celebrate National Selfie Day, snap away with confidence and creativity. But also take a moment to step back and appreciate the vast, interconnected world around you. Know that while your selfie is a piece of your story, it’s just one frame in the grand movie of life. But it is a valuable frame... it is YOUR frame.
