The diplomatic boycott by some nations of the Winter Olympics being held in Beijing has once again drawn world attention towards human rights abuses of Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang. And religion does play a role, ironically in a so-called atheist state. The Chinese Communist Party sees religions as competitors, says James Millward, Professor of Intersocietal History at the Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University. They're really trying to displace or de-centre religion for those people for whom it might be a central aspect of their lives; they want to replace that with the Chinese Communist Party as a focus of faith and belief, he told StratNews Global in this podcast.
