EP 171 - Debbie Ausburn - Lessons in Foster and Blended Parenting
Manage episode 441515161 series 2933210
Debbie Ausburn is a social worker turned lawyer who has been working with traumatized children for over 40 years. Her experience in this field started when she was a preteen helping her parents with their summer camp and church ministries.
Throughout her career, she has served in various roles, including juvenile court probation officer/social worker, group home parent, criminal prosecutor, non-profit volunteer, and Board member, and attorney defending youth-serving organizations.
Her most important roles, however, have been as a foster parent and stepparent, through which she has managed to collect seven children and ten grandchildren. Debbie has learned important life lessons from her experiences with her foster children, stepchildren, and grandchildren, and she now enjoys sharing about how to build strong relationships as their Plan B parent.
She has appeared on numerous podcasts, radio shows, and television broadcasts and is a frequently requested speaker for foster parent associations, camping programs, childcare center associations, private school conferences, and child—service organizations. My book, Raising Other People’s Children: What Foster Parenting Taught Me about Bringing Together a Blended Family, outlines many of those lessons. I also blog about parenting topics at RaisingOtherPeoplesChildren.blog
