Vados appeared to be the victim of a hit-and-run, but investigation of the case failed to develop evidence that would lead to a suspect and the case went cold. In June, 2005, the body of Kenneth McDavid was found in a Los Angeles alley, again appearing to have been the victim of a hit-and-run. An inquiry with LAPD by an insurance company investigator led to a conversation between two detectives who realized that Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmidt each had insurance policies on Vados and McDavid.
