Tampa Bay Watch invites you to celebrate World Oyster Day with them. Monday, Aug. 5, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Staff, interns, and volunteers of Tampa Bay Watch will set up at two locations. At both locations, visitors can take home a vertical oyster garden to suspend off their dock, improving the health of Tampa Bay, or participate in the creation of different oyster-themed crafts open to all ages.
World Oyster Day https://tampabaywatch.org/world-oyster-day/
  • Tampa Bay Watch, 3000 Pinellas Bayway S, Tierra Verde, FL 33715
  • Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center, 700 2nd Ave NE, St. Petersburg, FL 33701
WORLD OYSTER DAY The history of World Oyster Day is unknown; however, these magnificent mollusks are estimated to be over 200 million years old. World Oyster Day celebrates the different species that are categorized as bivalve mollusks, meaning a two-part hinged shell containing a soft-bodied invertebrate. Celebrate World Oyster Day by becoming an oyster gardener and fostering your own oyster reef habitat to contribute to ecosystem health. Additionally, enjoy oysters at one of Tampa Bay Watch's 14 Shells for Shorelines partner restaurants, which recycle oyster shells to go back into Tampa Bay waterways.
OYSTERS & CLEAN WATER Oysters are a keystone species, meaning that without them, the environment would suffer drastic consequences. A single adult oyster can filter up to 2 gallons of water an hour, and 50 gallons of water a day, playing a significant role in keeping bay waters clean and healthy. At Tampa Bay Watch, there are various oyster reef restoration projects including oyster reef balls, living shorelines, shell bags, and vertical oyster gardens. The beauty of vertical oyster gardens lies in their simplicity and accessibility for home use. They require no extensive permitting or maintenance and can be easily suspended off your own dock. World Oyster Day celebrates the appreciation and vital importance of this remarkable species.
