Penn State is still a second half team
It was another sleepy start to the game for the Nittany Lions. Penn State got out to a slow start in the first half, managing just six points in the first two quarters while allowing 20 through the first two frames But not all slow starts are the same.
The team marched down the field on the opening drive, but a penalty on fourth and goal negated a Tyler Warren touchdown. Later, the team drove down into the red zone again but failed to punch the ball into the end zone.
Defensively, Penn state failed to keep a lid on the big plays from USC early on. Specifically, the Penn State run defense was leaky, allowing 147 rushing yards in the first half. That mark included a 75-yard end-around for a touchdown to start off the scoring for USC.
However, the defense executed their usual second-half adjustments, allowing just three yards in the third quarter.
Allar fights through adversity
It was a breakout performance among a season of standout performances for Warren. The Penn State tight end saw the ball early and often in the matchup with USC, finishing the game with 17 catches for 224 yards and a touchdown. Most impressivley, 151 of those yards came after the catch.
However, the most impressive performance of the night may have come from quarterback Drew Allar. The third-year quarterback threw two interceptions during the game, but fought back to command a drive of the ages for the Penn State offense. Down by seven points with just six minutes left in the game, Allar and his offense went nine plays for 75 yards, including two fourth-down conversions and a 14-yard touchdown strike to Nick Singleton to cap off the performance.
After two stops by the defense to end regulation and then force a missed field goal in overtime, Penn State's Ryan Barker kicked the winning field goal.
