It was the Dalai Lama who said ‘Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.’ On the surface, that might sound extravagant. We can’t all fly off to the Maldives, or spend weeks away from family or work to explore the world. But think about it a little, and think about it in terms of your cycling.

‘Some place new’ needn’t be far-flung, or five-star. Your bike can take you anywhere, and with a little research and planning, it needn’t cost the earth.

From a new stretch of road, to a new town, city or even a new country, the anticipation and thrill of going ‘someplace you’ve never been before’ is the true joy of travel. Exploring new places on a bike brings the promise of a perfect new road to ride.

Maybe the best climb you’ve ever ridden is just round the corner, with a jawdropping view at the top followed by a sweeping descent down to a cafe serving some mouth-watering local cuisine.

In this week's issue we talk to the writers who explored Slovenia - home of Tadej Pogačar - and Cyprus, courtesy of a cycling loving, luxurious, boutique hotel owner. You can read the articles in the October 10 issue of Cycling Weekly magazine
