That one rare skin that makes you look like Darth Vader, or maybe the butterfly knife that displays the logo of your favorite eSports team - there’s always a hook to keep you playing those games. But the C-suite executives in these gaming companies knew that gamers were eager for faster progression, or for the quick fix of a particular drop, so they capitalized on it and embraced the microtransaction model. Games that you wouldn’t expect to take advantage of this path are now shifting gears, and popular franchises have moved into the profitable, and sometimes predatory, space.
