God’s Man Amos with God’s Message, Judgment (Amos 1:1-15)

Handout

Amos was a sheep breeder and fruit farmer from the desert town of Tekoa. Despite his ordinary background, God called him to become one of the greatest prophets of the Old Testament. A country preacher from the Southern Kingdom of Judah, Amos was given a divine message to deliver to the Northern Kingdom of Israel. God declared His judgment. Numbers 23:19; 1 Samuel 15:29; Isaiah 46:9-11

Amos was a contemporary with the Prophet Hosea. God used both men in extraordinary ways. Reading both men’s stories and prophecies, we see that God’s ways often seem strange and different. Isaiah 55:8-9

Amos delivered the LORD’s message to the people in Israel, addressing the nations surrounding them. If connected by a line, the nations he prophesied about would form a circle around the Northern Kingdom of Israel.

Each prophetic word that came from Amos’ mouth was a direct from God. Amos had to receive his motivation and message from the Holy Spirit in order to convey such powerfully accurate truths to God’s people.

Amos preached God’s judgment to the nations for their injustice and cruelty toward the poor and the weak, promising that God would send fire and retribution. God judged.

Amos preached God’s judgment to the nations for their injustice in enslaving His people. God said He would send judgment, and He did.

Amos preached God’s judgment to the nations for their injustice in breaking their covenant of brotherhood with Israel. God subjected the offending nation to judgment and punishment.

Amos preached God’s judgment against the nations for their injustice, characterized by a vengeful spirit and a lack of compassion toward the people of Israel.

Amos preached God’s judgment against the nations for their injustice, specifically their cruelty and violent crimes against His people.
