Forgetting God

There was a Latin phrase that was once popular amongst Christians and was even used in some Christian liturgies, and that is the phrase Coram Deo, which means "before the face of God". This captures the essence of the text for this week, that the whole of the Christian life is to be lived Coram Deo - before the face of God. To plan our lives apart from God, as if to forget him, is to rob him of his glory. What is more, is that when we forget God and rob him of his glory, we also take his place as the captain of our future, but it is God who works the future according to his goodwill and pleasure. The remedy to planning life without reference to God is not to tack “God willing” onto the end of our plans as some kind of Christian cliché but rather to tether it to our hearts as those who live all of life - Coram Deo.
