From Cravings to Clarity: Managing Triggers in Recovery, Beyond Addiction Podcast EP 124 Join us on "Beyond Addiction from Gulf Breeze Recovery" as we explore the unique elements of the Three Principles approach. This methodology sets Gulf Breeze Recovery apart in the field of substance abuse treatment. This episode offers an in-depth look at how insights, mindfulness, and personalized treatment plans are pivotal in the recovery journey. We'll also discuss the importance of addressing underlying traumas through specialized therapies like EMDR and neurofeedback. It's an essential listen for anyone interested in understanding how a tailored treatment program can lead to more effective and meaningful recovery processes. Finding the right treatment center can make all the difference in overcoming addiction. Gulf Breeze Recovery (GBR) takes a unique approach that has helped countless individuals find their path to lasting recovery. Let's explore what makes our program unique and how it can help you or your loved one break free from addiction. Unlike many traditional treatment facilities, Gulf Breeze Recovery isn't focused on treating addiction as a lifelong disease. Instead, we believe in your natural ability to heal and grow. Our 30-bed facility ensures that every person gets the personal attention they need. Here, you're not just another patient – you're a unique individual with your own story and needs. The Three Principles Approach: A Path to Natural Healing When Barnett Gilmer founded Gulf Breeze Recovery, his primary objective was to develop a substance abuse treatment program focused on empowering individuals. Traditionally, substance abuse programs tend to emphasize pathology and the notion of being "broken." In stark contrast, the Three Principles approach was adopted to help individuals realize their innate health and well-being. Gilmer's vision was to offer a path to recovery that would allow people to gain insights into their behaviors and understand the root causes of their addiction. Think of your mind like a snow globe. When you're stressed or dealing with addiction, the snow constantly swirls, making it hard to see clearly. Our approach helps that snow settle, allowing you to see things as they are. This clarity leads to "insights"—those "aha moments" that can change everything. Understanding Your Journey One unique aspect of Gulf Breeze Recovery is its commitment to personalized treatment plans. Unlike more extensive facilities, Gulf Breeze Recovery is a 30-bed facility where everyone is known by name and receives a customized treatment plan. This individualized approach is essential when dealing with patients' backgrounds and needs. Every person's path to addiction is different, and we believe your recovery should be just as personal. That's why we create custom treatment plans for each guest. Whether you're dealing with: Past trauma Anxiety Depression PTSD Or other challenges We offer specialized therapies, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and neurofeedback. These advanced treatments can help heal wounds you might not have known you had. Total Transformation: Healing Beyond Addiction, Podcast EP 123 Beyond Addiction Podcast: Gulf Breeze Recovery's Transformative Approach This episode focuses on the heart of addiction recovery and the innovative methods employed at Gulf Breeze Recovery. Our special guest, Heather L'Huillier, the admissions director, shares her personal journey and professional insights, offering a beacon of hope for those struggling with addiction. Her story resonates with many who have faced the challenges of addiction. A candid account of her struggles provides a raw and authentic look at the complexities of addiction and the path to recovery. By sharing her experiences, Heather bridges the gap between those seeking help and the professionals offering support. Heather's battle with addiction began at a young age, triggered by early substance use and compounded by life events such as prescribed pain medication after childbirth. Her story is one of struggle, trial, and resilience. Over her 27-year history with substance use, Heather attempted multiple methods to control her addiction, often falling into cycles of shame and failure. A Non-Twelve-Step Approach Gulf Breeze Recovery has a non-twelve-step program and tailored treatment to individual needs rather than following a one-size-fits-all model. One of the key insights from our conversation is the pivotal role that trauma plays in addiction. Gulf Breeze Recovery's approach underscores the significance of addressing underlying trauma as a fundamental step in the healing process. This understanding reframes addiction not as a moral failing but as a coping mechanism for deeper emotional wounds. A crucial aspect of Gulf Breeze Recovery's methodology is the focus on building trust and helping individuals redefine their identity beyond addiction. 1 Recovery Transformation: Witnessing Change from Within, Therapist Aggie Ormsby, Beyond Addiction Podcast EP 122 44:37
In this episode of the Beyond Addiction Podcast, enjoy an enlightening dialogue with therapist Aggie Ormsby as she discusses the reshaping of the mental health landscape to favor a more comprehensive and person-centric approach to dealing with addiction and mental health issues. Aggie underscores the necessity of breaking out of traditional fixed treatment protocols to favor the multifaceted nature of human psychology. The conversation delves deeper into the significant role of trauma-informed care and the incorporation of holistic therapies. Ormsby highlights how important it is for treatment procedures to be equipped to grapple with the profound and pervasive effects of trauma. She discusses the challenge of shifting the focus from traditional dichotomous models to a versatile approach that is differential to each individual's unique needs and life journey and flexible enough to factor in the individual's past, present and intended future. Understanding Holistic Approaches in Addiction Recovery and Mental Health Addiction recovery and mental health treatment have long been fields in need of diverse, flexible methods that cater to the complex, multifaceted nature of human psychology. Traditional models often rely on strict, one-size-fits-all approaches, leaving many individuals feeling boxed in and misunderstood. However, the evolving landscape of mental health care now emphasizes holistic, individualized treatment plans that acknowledge the uniqueness of each person's journey toward healing and recovery. At the forefront of this shift is a growing recognition of the limitations inherent in conventional therapeutic methods. For example, cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and psychoanalytical approaches have proven effective for many. Yet, for some, the rigidity and predictability of these treatments can feel restricting. This realization has paved the way for more personalized, adaptive therapeutic models prioritizing the individual's needs, backgrounds, and personal history above a predetermined treatment protocol. The key to successful rehabilitation and mental health care is an approach unique to those seeking help. Therapy should not be a one-way street where the patient is merely an observer in their healing journey. Instead, it should be a collaborative, engaging process that empowers individuals to participate actively in their recovery. By focusing on the person rather than the problem, therapists can unlock a deeper level of care that resonates more personally and meaningfully, inspiring hope and empowerment in the audience. The Role of Trauma-Informed Care and Holistic Therapies Trauma-informed care represents a significant pillar in the foundation of modern therapeutic strategies. Understanding the profound and often pervasive effects of trauma on the human psyche is crucial for facilitating recovery. Trauma can alter an individual's brain chemistry, emotional responses, and even physical health, making it imperative that treatment modalities are equipped to address these complex outcomes. Holistic therapies, like the services offered at innovative recovery centers like Gulf Breeze Recovery (GBR), are gaining traction as powerful tools in treating addiction and mental health issues. These practices acknowledge the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit, offering treatments beyond conventional talk therapy. Techniques such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), yoga, mindfulness, and meditation are integrated into therapeutic programs to provide a more rounded, comprehensive approach to healing. 1 The Silent Progression of Alcohol Addiction, Graduate Steve Holcomb, Beyond Addiction Podcast EP 120 30:29
The Silent Progression of Alcohol Addiction, Graduate Steve Holcomb, Beyond Addiction Podcast EP 120 In the unending fight against addiction, each story of recovery offers valuable insights and hope. On the latest episode of the Beyond Addiction Podcast, we delve deep into the story of Steve Holcomb, a Gulf Breeze Recovery graduate whose strength and resilience brought him back from the dark depths of alcohol addiction. Steve unpacks his precarious journey, from his early introduction to alcohol at the tender age of 14 to his harrowing daily vortex of vodka addiction. Steve opens up about the cunning nature of addiction and its inexorable impact on physical health and mental clarity. Continuing along the lines of his remarkable transformation, Steve speaks about the importance of seeking help and the lifeline it can provide to those drowning in addiction. He vividly recounts his own experience, describing how a relative’s recommendation led him to Gulf Breeze Recovery (GBR) and marked the pivotal first step towards his sobriety. His tale emphasizes the significance of finding a recovery program that offers not just care, but a long and happy alcohol-free future. The Scourge of Alcohol Addiction For countless individuals, the descent into alcohol addiction begins subtly, often with casual habits that insidiously escalate over time. Steve Holcomb’s story exemplifies this, starting with occasional beers at 14 and progressing to a staggering daily intake of a gallon of vodka by adulthood. What may begin as a social lubricant or coping mechanism can advance into a dependency that eludes detection, as addicts craftily conceal their consumption. But addiction, with its inherent cunning nature, always reaches a tipping point—when the physical deterioration and mental fog can no longer be ignored. Holcomb’s narrative serves as a vivid reminder of addiction's progressive and sneaky character. The changes it effects aren’t solely confined to a person's habits, but they extend deeply into their physical health and mental clarity. Witnessing one’s body and life warp under the unyielding clutches of addiction is often what compels individuals to seek help. Realizing this, Holcomb knew he had to undertake dramatic steps to reclaim his life from alcohol’s grasp. Reaching out for help is a monumental step in the recovery process, one that requires both courage and vulnerability. For Steve Holcomb, this moment came through an unlikely connection with a family member. With a preference for quality and a touch of luxury, he sought a recovery center that would not only offer him the care he needed but also ensure that he did it in a comfortable environment. This led him to discover Gulf Breeze Recovery (GBR) through the recommendation of his relative. Making the decision to enter a rehabilitation facility often comes after several less effective attempts at curbing addiction. Holcomb himself had previously stepped through the doors of other rehab centers, only to return to drinking shortly after. The repetitive cycle of short-lived sobriety followed by relapse is a common struggle among those battling addiction. It emphasizes the importance of finding a program that resonates and effectively addresses the multifaceted nature of addiction. 1 Little Things Can Make a Big Difference! Heather L'Huillier, Adm's Dir., Beyond Addiction EP 119 22:08
Heather L'Huillier, Adm's Dir., Gulf Breeze Recovery I was born in Marquette, Michigan, but my mom moved us around often. Went to 17 different schools by 8th grade. I have been married for 30 years and have 2 sons and a daughter. My husband served 21 years in the Navy, so I also have experience as a military spouse. I have a Yorkshire Terrier and 2 rescue dogs. During nursing school, I bottle-fed a handful of orphan cats and couldn’t bear to part with them. In December of 2022, I graduated with my bachelor of science in nursing. I’ve been to treatment twice and have been in recovery for 7 years. This is something I never thought would be possible. The darkness of active addiction felt hopeless and impossible to overcome which is why I share my experience openly with our guests. There is always hope. 1 A New Vision of Addiction Recovery, Beyond Addiction with Joe Bailey & Barnett Gilmer Ep 118 49:49
A New Vision of Addiction Recovery, Beyond Addiction with Joe Bailey & Barnett Gilmer Ep 118 In this episode of "Beyond Addiction with Joe Bailey and Barnett Gilmer," we delve into the pioneering recovery strategies at Gulf Breeze Recovery (GBR). Under the visionary leadership of Barnett Gilmer, GBR tackles addiction recovery with a fresh, holistic health recovery model. Stepping away from traditional treatments, GBR's approach underscores the innate capabilities of the individual, housing the recovery process within rather than without. Listen in as we dive into how GBR was born out of Gilmer's understanding of his battles with insecurity and his mission to help those who have a substance use disorder get in touch with their inner health without labeling them as "broken." Further into the episode, we explore Gulf Breeze's philosophy, with particular attention given to The Three Principles and Inner Resilience, the bedrock principles on which GBR's treatment program is built. You'll garner insights from the masters themselves, as Joe Bailey, author and therapist specializing in unlocking innate mental health, elaborates how GBR parted ways with the traditional disease treatment model to affirm the individual's inherent health and resilience. Join us as we unpack how this groundbreaking perspective shifted the focus from guilt and shame to nurturing intrinsic well-being, empowering the individual to recover holistically. A Deep-Dive into the GBR Philosophy: The Three Principles and Inner Resilience Upon discovering the power of the three principles paradigm—a psychological approach based on the understanding that individuals experience the world through their thoughts—the framework for GBR's treatment program was set. Barnett further enriched this with Joe Bailey. Joe's journey intersected with GBR's philosophy when he recognized that the recovery process could be energizing and transformative instead of grueling and discouraging. This signified a departure from the prevailing disease model that emphasizes the patient's "sickness," promoting instead an affirmation of the individual's inherent health and resilience. This paradigm shift moves away from guilt and shame and towards nurturing an intrinsic wellbeing that empowers the individual to recover more fully and sustainably. Moreover, GBR's approach is not limited to the clinical setting but extends its influence on the staff. The center prioritizes maintaining the mental health of its counselors, understanding that an energized and positive staff significantly benefits the recovery process. It's a comprehensive environment where healing is cultivated for everyone involved. A Significant Shift: Results That Speak for Themselves What sets GBR apart from many other treatment facilities is the focus on outcomes that challenge the norms of addiction recovery. Many guests have attended multiple treatment programs before finding something different at GBR—something that works. Instead of perpetuating the disease model that labels them according to their addictions, GBR helps clients rediscover their capacity for insight, clear thinking, and well-being. The result is a substantial reduction in the resistance often encountered in traditional recovery programs. With shame and guilt removed from the equation, GBR guests can engage in honest conversations about their behaviors while always focusing on their potential for positive change and growth. It's a strategy that honors the person at their core rather than defining them by their struggles. Discover the Healing Potential of Recreational Therapy for Addiction Recovery, Season 2, Ep 117 Read Post: https://www.gulfbreezerecovery.com/rehab-blog/healing-potential-of-recreational-therapy-for-addiction/ Therapeutic Recreation and the Journey to Sobriety In the world of rehabilitation and recovery, different modalities and therapy approaches are employed to guide individuals on their path to a substance-free life. Among these, therapeutic recreation emerges as a crucial, yet often undervalued, component of a holistic treatment plan. In this insightful exploration, we delve into the role of recreational therapy within rehabilitation settings, focusing on the transformative experience it offers. We also tap into the deeper significance of leisure as a cornerstone of human connection, mental health, and, ultimately, sober living. What is Recreational Therapy? Recreational therapy, sometimes known as therapeutic recreation, is an innovative approach that uses leisure and recreational activities as a therapeutic modality. Its purpose is to aid individuals in achieving their personal goals, whether physical, emotional, cognitive or social. Unlike conventional therapy, recreational therapy disguises therapeutic objectives within the enjoyment of leisure activities, allowing guests to progress toward recovery in a more engaging and less pressured setting. The practices and benefits address mobility, physical health, emotional well-being, and social skills. The ultimate aim is to allow individuals to rediscover old hobbies, cultivate new interests, and rekindle the joy and fulfillment that active leisure pursuits can offer. Nolee Quote: " I use leisure and recreation to teach people it's possible to have fun sober and I get people to reintroduce themselves to themselves." The Role of Recreation in Rehabilitation In rehab environments like Gulf Breeze Recovery, recreation brings a valuable dimension to the traditional treatment framework. Rehab facilities often deal with individuals who have become isolated due to their substance use disorders. Therapeutic recreation serves as a medium through which guests relearn social behaviors, understand the joy of sober fun, and rebuild their self-identity outside addiction's shadow. Outings into the community are an integral part of this therapy method. These outings could include activities such as walking on the beach, participating in nature walks, or engaging in a sports match. Far from being frivolous, these activities are strategic. They reintroduce guests to a world where fun doesn't have to be fueled by substances and where simple, natural experiences, like feeling the sun on one's skin or hearing the laughter of others, become memorable and healing. The Challenge of Reintegration and Having Fun Sober One of the most pertinent hurdles in the recovery journey is overcoming an ingrained belief that life without substances is monotonous or dull. Many individuals in recovery may have forgotten what it means to laugh or feel real enjoyment without the crutch of drugs or alcohol. Recreational therapy directly challenges this belief, demonstrating through direct experience that it is not only possible but also rewarding to have fun while sober. Nolee shares that the wonder of these therapeutic experiences often lies in their simplicity. These moments can signify profound turning points, whether it is a person going canoeing after a year of self-imposed seclusion or a gentleman just appreciating the sun's warmth on the dock. Therapeutic recreation facilitates these epiphanies, reminding guests that they can find del https://www.gulfbreezerecovery.com/…

It's a scenario many listeners will relate to, evoking a vivid sense of the complex relationship many may have with alcohol. Stephen candidly recalls a poignant incident from his childhood. In fourth grade, he made an innocent-sounding yet profound decision to swap his beer with water, to cope with the prevalent drinking culture in his family. He shares how GBR was not just a simple addiction recovery program, but a haven that helped him distort the bleak reality of his addiction. It provided him with what he needed not only to battle his demons but also to come out the other side, a victor. According to Steven "The morning before I went to GBR , I found myself at the liquor store at 8:55 because they opened at nine. Yes, you heard me right, 8:55 in the morning. He admits to initially seeking a pill or a prescription to solve his woes. Yet, through the lens of his own journey, he came to understand a valuable life lesson. The tools and keys to change, transformation, and growth lie within each individual. Stephen manages to turn a corner in the episode, drawing intriguing parallels between respected Buddhist practices and GBR's approach to addiction recovery. He delves into enigmatic concepts like universal consciousness, karma, kindness, and how they transcend religious boundaries and reach into the realm of practical life application. As the episode reaches a philosophical peak, Stephen rectifies misconceptions around karma. It's not merely a transactional concept but an understood reality of life that doing good yields positive rewards. He shares how his experiences and philosophies have engrained this belief in his life, leaving listeners in a mesmerizing introspective state. According to Shana: "We all have different ideas of addiction and what that looks like. Many do not want to feel something and begin using a substance outside of themselves to regulate their feelings. I have clients who will be in a room full of people and still feel lonely. As counselors, we can guide and ground them to pull themselves back. We offer a sense of safety. At GBR, we want to focus on individualized care. We use therapies that bring guests into balance and help them concentrate on areas where they need to focus. And allows us to be able to relax in other areas." THIS PODCAST IS WITH KAT A GRADUATE OF GULF BREEZE RECOVERY. Kat has been through the GBR program and we are excited to speak with her about her journey since leaving Gulf Breeze Recovery. Kat entered treatment at Gulf Breeze Recovery in 2016 after a twelve-year struggle with substance abuse. She has just celebrated seven years of continuous recovery. Today, she lives in Nashville, Tennessee with her husband and daughter, where she enjoys reading, hiking, and spending time with family. She works as a COO of a corporation. MY ADDICTION WAS ALL-ENCOMPASSING. “My addiction was all-encompassing. I was a person who used drugs and alcohol in a way that was unhealthy and unsustainable. The using was all-encompassing, including figuring out how to get money to use; everything involved in that lifestyle took up my entire life; it was my entire personality. And so, for me getting clean wasn’t just about putting down the drugs; it was about figuring out who I was, who I wanted to be what kind of life I wanted to live because I spent almost a dozen years in active addiction, from the time I was an adolescent. I had no concept of what a healthy life looked like. I had no concept of what I even wanted for myself. It’s been this beautiful process of starting from nothing. I got to do this paint-by-number, build a life, and put all the things that were good for my spirit into it; I got to build myself into the kind of woman I wanted to be when I grew up. And I definitely got the tools to do that at Gulf Breeze Recovery.” Gulf Breeze Was Not My First Treatment Center. “Gulf Breeze was not my first treatment center. And it was not my first attempt at recovery. I went to my first 12 Step meeting when I was 17. And I got to Gulf Breeze when I was 28. I tried many things during that period. And the thing at Gulf Breeze that was so different, is that every other facility I had been to give me a list of action items; it was very much a doing this, you need to wake up at this time, go to these groups. When you get out, you need to do this many meetings now. It was a list of steps, which was fine, and they were all good things. They were all things that were conducive to recovery. But the problem was, I needed help figuring out how to make my own list of things that worked for me; I couldn’t make any independent choices when those things were not available to me. What Gulf Breeze did for me was teach me intimately about the nature of my thinking and wisdom. And so, I got to learn how my thoughts were creating my own experience, how to tell the difference between egoic and chaotic thinking and something that was coming from my own wisdom. What’s funny is today, I choose to do many things I was taught in early treatment centers because they’re fun and give a lot to my spirit, and I find a community that I can give back in. But I do it from a place of this is something that moves me. This is something that I feel drawn to do. Versus this is a list of steps that someone is making me take. What I got from GBR is how to be still. And listen for that voice of wisdom and trust it.” Read and Watch more... https://www.gulfbreezerecovery.com/…
1 Episode #112 The Intersection of Trauma and Addiction: Pamela Downey of Gulf Breeze Recovery 24:39
Pamela Downey a licensed mental health counselor in Florida has been with Gulf Breeze Recovery since their inception in 2013. As a therapist with a background in multiple disciplines, Pamela appreciates integration with a focus on wellness. She has enjoyed working in private practice as a psychotherapist in downtown Pensacola since 2014, working with clients with various life concerns. Pamela is passionate about helping people heal from traumatic experiences with advanced training in EMDR, Eye movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. She also enjoys teaching EMDR to other therapists. EMDR is a comprehensive and integrative modality best known as an evidenced-based treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and many other presenting symptoms and diagnostics. Another area of focus for Pamela has been working with people experiencing addiction. She has been a part of a passionate team at Gulf Breeze Recovery. Pamela teaches several psycho-educational classes in this non-12-step, wellness-based inpatient addiction recovery center and hosts graduate and family support groups. In addition to such psychotherapy approaches, Pamela is an enthusiastic provider of EEG Neurofeedback. Neurofeedback offers a brain-based approach to training the brain to think, feel and perform better. Using an exciting, streamlined technology that utilizes the best minds in the business, generating research-based protocols, clients have access to the accelerated capacity of the brain to move out of states of over and under activation ( a root of many of our symptoms and barrier to many of our goals), clients see significant symptom improvement,( from depression and anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, and other attention/focus or cognitive issues, to performance enhancement across in the arts, professional life and sports). Pamela looks forward to continued collaboration with my colleagues, community and clients to find the best ways of experiencing our best life. According to Pamela I look at trauma through a broader lens. Trauma can cause many different issues, including depression, PTSD, addiction, and cross-correspondences between all of those variations of how one experiences a dwindling or a lack of mental health or quality of life. I'm also bringing shame up in this conversation about trauma because one of the premier researchers on the experience of shame, Dr. Brene Brown, talks about how shame can bring up the same symptoms physiologically and neurobiologically that trauma does. I teach a kind of therapy that has its roots in the treatment of trauma. That therapy is EMDR. Many of our therapists at Gulf Breeze Recovery are trained in EMDR therapy; it's an excellent modality that cross-corresponds very well with our treatment program to give our guests the best treatment possible. And we add neurofeedback. So that is a sort of trifecta of trauma and addiction treatment. We are looking at what neural network or file folder in the brain seems to represent this person's symptoms and difficulties when they see us for addiction and beyond. By the way, no one comes to see us just for addiction. People come to see us to have a better life and a better experience of their life to regain something that they've lost or cultivate something that they have not had. And that is really what addiction is about. It is all just part of how much I enjoy being able to talk with people and help people with trauma and addiction. I know that we are on the cutting edge of a very big paradigm shift in treating addiction and recovery at Gulf Breeze Recovery. People do not want not to use a substance; they want a solution to why they are using it. https://www.gulfbreezerecovery.com/…

In this episode of “Beyond Addiction”, Episode-#108 “Substitution in Addiction" , Danielle Guinaugh and Barnett from Gulf Breeze Recovery , a non-12-step holistic drug and alcohol rehab in Florida, talk about the critical role of counseling and therapy for treating substitution addiction issues. In "Beyond Addiction" Episode #19 7, Danielle Guinaugh, the clinical director of our non-12-step holistic drug and alcohol treatment program explains: "We start by seeing the innocence in addiction, that the consequences may be felt on a personal level, but the actual addiction is based on a core misunderstanding of how we meet the thoughts and feelings that life offers us, and where we started using substances instead of our personal innate resilience." One of the issues we discuss is the phenomena of substitution in addiction, of one substance or activity, for another. Often when people overcome drugs or alcohol by traditional means, they substitute that addiction for another. If your drug of choice was opiates, you may switch to alcohol, or in the case of alcohol-related issues, people switch to a chemical. It does not even need to be a substance. Many become workaholics, start shopping, or engage in sex to substitute for their untreated addiction. As Barnett puts it: "People engage in what I refer to as the "Not Doing-ness" of addiction." This attempt to "Not-Do" overlooks the fundamental misunderstanding behind the addiction, which never works. There is a better way to overcome addiction than "White-Knuckling," or "Not-Doing." By exploring the core reasons for their addiction, people become enlightened by their discovery, gaining the insights necessary to lead a happier, more fulfilling life, without drugs and alcohol, or the need for substitutions to their former addiction. “Beyond Addiction” is a podcast dedicated to establishing a new outlook on addiction treatment centered around the inside out approach to recovery. Our non-traditional non-12 step , holistic approach to alcohol and drug treatment recognizes the effectiveness of people rediscovering their innate health and core resilience that resides in each of us. In this episode of “Beyond Addiction”, Episode-#109, “Relapse and Substitution”, with Ales Carle and Barnett from Gulf Breeze Recovery , a non-12-step holistic drug and alcohol rehab in Florida, we talk about the frustration for the individual and their family with relapse and substitution. Alex shares her journey from relapses to recovery. Everybody’s story is different. Barnett speaks of the people who have come to Gulf Breeze Recovery and have been to multiple treatment centers or maybe one treatment center multiple times. They lose hope and the family loses hope, and to a certain extent, the family has somewhat earned the right to give up. They don't understand why it's not working, their loved one has been to treatment, and they're still choosing to use. One of the issues that we've been talking about in different podcasts is what people experience with the traditional model of treatment. And the analogy that I want to use is the one of a plant. In that analogy, you see only above the surface. That’s the using, the scheming, the manipulation, the hiding, everything that goes on with a person that is suffering from a substance use disorder. The roots indicate internal unrest. One of these roots might be depression; one may represent anxiety, even something as simple as boredom, and as serious as trauma could be one of them. In traditional treatment, they are chopping off the plant. Chopping off the observable behavior of addiction. But the problem is that when we just concentrate on the observable behaviors of addiction, we don't address the internal unrest, the root cause. We all know what happens when you have a plant with fertile soil, and firm roots in place; well, that plant typically grows back. However, when we focus on the root, and we can get the root to start to die away, to wither away, then suddenly, the need to find something outside as a solution whether it be drugs, alcohol, or whatever goes away. And that's what makes us unique, we're helping to get that person to the root cause. Our non-traditional non-12 step , holistic approach to alcohol and drug treatment recognizes the effectiveness of people rediscovering their innate health and core resilience that resides in each of us. In this episode of “Beyond Addiction”, Episode-#107 “The The Health of the Family”, Joe Bailey and Barnett from Gulf Breeze Recovery , a non-12-step holistic drug and alcohol rehab in Florida, talk about the impact of addiction on the family. Barnett discusses with the author of six published books including the latest book “Thriving in the Eye of the Hurricane" ” Joe Bailey, the health of the family after their loved one returns from treatment. “Beyond Addiction” is a podcast dedicated to establishing a new outlook on addiction treatment centered around the inside-out approach to recovery. Traditional recovery modalities often concentrate on things like “triggers” and environment, social groups and creating a “safe space” to stay sober within by narrowing one’s experiences and interactions. This approach has in many cases resulted in multiple failed attempts to maintain sobriety and in worse cases, encouraged a state of chronic relapse. New, non-traditional, non 12 step, holistic approaches to alcohol and drug treatment recognize the effective development, or re-discovery, of the innate health and core resilience that abides in each of us just waiting to be rediscovered with a little bit of facilitating by an open-minded addiction counselor. Although we’ve discovered so much more than we knew about addiction over the past decade, addiction is still considered a disease by most treatment centers, and the individual with an addiction to be sick. We think it’s time to move beyond outdated perceptions and adapt treatments that take in the new brain science, and people’s awakening to their unbroken “I Am-ness” to go “Beyond Addiction.” Our non-traditional non-12 step , holistic approach to alcohol and drug treatment recognizes the effectiveness of people rediscovering their innate health and core resilience that resides in each of us. “Beyond Addiction” is a podcast dedicated to sharing an "inside out" approach to recovery. In the pilot episode of “Beyond Addiction”, Episode-1 “The Genesis of Addiction"”, Kat and Barnett from Gulf Breeze Recovery , a non-12-step holistic drug and alcohol rehab in Florida, talk about the components necessary for addiction to "blossom" by using the metaphor of a simple plant. An "outside-in" misunderstanding of the way we experience life creates the "fertile soil" for addiction to flourish. This misunderstanding happens when we attribute our feelings and our experience of life to people, places, things and situations outside of ourselves. What we mean by having an "inside out" understanding is understanding that we are actually experiencing all of life from the inside out, via the filter of our own thinking. The implications that this understanding has on addiction are profound. Attributing feelings of joy, happiness, completion, serenity, etc. to anything outside of ourselves innocently creates fertile ground for addiction. A person will return to a substance, person, activity or object over and over and over again searching for that good or "happy" feeling. It will always be a fruitless search because joy, happiness, completion, serenity, etc. are only available from the inside out. While traditional programs focus on a "prescription" of things a person must do in order to get through a day without drinking or using, we focus on getting to the underlying, root cause that led to substance abuse in the first place. Addressing the underlying cause of addiction and gaining an insightful understanding of the nature of all human experience has proven to be an effective way to overcome chronic relapse and substituting addictions. In this episode of “Beyond Addiction”, #102 episode, "The Fertile Soil of Addiction", Kat and Barnett from Gulf Breeze Recovery, a non-12 step holistic drug and alcohol rehab in Florida, talk about the fertile soil that is the home for the roots of addiction which include but are not limited to insecurity, traumas, depression, anxiety, boredom, etc. These are the conditions that occur below the surface before the observable behaviors of addiction grow and spring forth. These roots can be referred to as "Internal Unrest" and are the feelings and conditions we are often unaware of that cause us to seek from outside ourselves for relief. This manifests in activities, addictions, and attempts to organize, fix, manage, or manipulate conditions outside ourselves to keep these negative feelings at bay. Just like roots are growing under the surface before we ever see a plant, the components of internal unrest are the roots under the surface before the addiction itself is visible. The fertile soil of addiction represents an “outside in” misunderstanding that makes a person particularly susceptible to addiction. This misunderstanding happens when we attribute our feelings and our experience of life to people, places, things and situations outside of ourselves. The fertile soil represents the belief that something outside of ourselves can be responsible for positive feelings of happiness and peace, and for the feeling of completion and validation within ourselves, and this misunderstanding is what allows the addiction to really grow. The fact is that these positive feelings are only ever sustainable from within! We use this analogy to simplify the complicated issue of addiction. The good news is, once this is realized as a misunderstanding, the process of reorganizing our inner state to make the soil fallow for addictions to take hold and grow. “Beyond Addiction” is a podcast dedicated to establishing a new outlook on addiction treatment centered around the inside out approach to recovery. Our non-traditional non-12 step , holistic approach to alcohol and drug treatment recognizes the effectiveness of people rediscovering their innate health and core resilience that resides in each of us.
