In 2016, Yuriy Boyechko founded Hope for Ukraine to raise awareness for voices not heard in Ukraine, especially children affected by HIV and AIDS. Providing medical care for children with disabilities as well as food and clothing for families that live in extreme poverty. After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Yuriy’s work surged in importance. Today he joins Jay Ruderman to talk about how the work of providing food and material support to those who remain in Ukraine has become harder as public interest in Ukraine has waned in the face of other international affairs. They also discuss the hard work of minimizing overhead costs at a nonprofit and Yuriy’s deep appreciation for the people still living in Ukraine. ×In episode10 Leah is joined by Cat on the road. They discuss cycling through Quebec together on The King's Road and The Route Verte and what Leah's ride means to them both.
In episode 9 Leah talks about an eventful few days with another group of riders including an almost run in with a deer and maybe a bear? She also tells us about her visit to her old summer camp and why she loved it when she was a kid.
In our eighth episode we have 2 very special guests…Leah's parents! Debra and Robert tell us what it was like joining Leah on her ride through some of Ontario's toughest roads, including a very unique moose encounter. Oh, and Leah is halfway done!
In our 7th episode Leah tells us how she spent Canada Day with Mike Ranta, a man (and his dog) paddling across Canada in a canoe! Leah also talks about what its been like meeting other cyclists on the road and how she feels about being a month into her ride so far.
In episode six Leah tells us about spending her birthday in Winnipeg during Aboriginal Day, her route getting washed out and how excited she is to be in Ontario, her home province.
In our fifth episode Leah talks to us from the province of Manitoba. She tells us about the tails winds in Saskatchewan, her very first moose sighting and how shooting the documentary is going. She also reflects on her hardest day so far; riding up the Duffy.
In our fourth episode Leah talks to us from Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Leah answers the question "why are you riding across Canada?" and talks about some of the inspirations behind the ride including Terry Fox and her previous cycling experiences with AIDS/LifeCycle and Team In Training.
In our third episode Leah talks to us from Lake Louise, Alberta. She tells us about her ride over Rogers Pass in BC, Stewart the water angel, her surprise on the road, her first Province crossing, saying good bye to British Columbia and hello to Alberta.
In our second episode Leah tells us about a very cold wet night, celebrating her brother's 30th birthday in Squamish and tackling The Duffy!
In our very first installment of Leah Cycling Solo we talk to Leah about riding across Vancouver Island, her first bear sighting, her highlights so far and how much she loves her bike, the Surly Long Haul Trucker, AKA The Wall Climber. And also, how much she's dreading "The Duffy".
