Season 2 Podcast 49 “To Strive, To Seek, To Find, and not To Yield”

The title comes from the genius of Tennyson in his poem Ulysses. I shall quote generously from his poem.

Free hearts, free foreheads—you and I are old;

Old age hath yet his honour and his toil;

Death closes all: but something ere the end,

Some work of noble note, may yet be done,

Not unbecoming men that strove with Gods.

The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks:

The long day wanes: the slow moon climbs: the deep

Moans round with many voices. Come, my friends,

'T is not too late to seek a newer world.

Push off, and sitting well in order smite

The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds

To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths

Of all the western stars, until I die.

It may be that the gulfs will wash us down:

It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,

And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.

Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'

We are not now that strength which in old days

Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;

One equal temper of heroic hearts,

Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will

To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Striving is unique to all of us, though perhaps we don’t all face the trials of life with the courage of a Ulysses. Still we must face them. All people have a will unique to themselves. Some weaken their will through repetition of negative behavior, destructive thinking, and bad habits. Some give in to the natural man and allow physical appetites to dominate will, living in a gluttony of carnal appetites, becoming a slave to the body; however, though will can be smothered, it cannot be killed. Addictions may rule our appetites and govern our wants, needs, and passions, but addictions cannot rule our will—that we must forfeit ourselves. The body, not the spirit, is subject to addictions. The will governs the body. The spirit governs the will. The will is spiritual, not temporal. The will is not in the body or in the brain. It is only in the spirit. The spirit, though influenced by the body, always contains the potential to rise above all lusts of the flesh. That is why all people can overcome all addictions, all people can change, and all people can rise above their circumstances. The catalyst is desire. Desire is to the will what appetites are to the body. The opposition is lust which grows from a surfeit of appetites and passions.

Faith is a three-legged stool. For a well-balanced life, we need all three legs.

· First there is faith in self.

· Second there is faith in others or outside sources.

· Third there is faith in God.

Sometimes problems are within our own power. However, we must ever keep in mind that we are children of God, and that which we have we owe to God. The inimitable Paul teaches us about the diversities of gifts.

1 Corinthians 12:4-11

8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
